I ordered my laptop with sleeve. I am wondering if I should just go ahead an order a regular NOrthface/Jansport type school backpack or should I get a laptop bag with a protected area for the laptop?

laptop bag OR regular school bag with notebook sleeve

edit: or laptop bag + laptop in sleeve?

I bought a nice padded sleeve and will put that into my regular backpack (which is kinda padded too). Should be more than enough. It's definitely more protection than some so-called "laptop backpacks" I've looked at.

Also the other way around, do you need a laptop sleeve if you're going to use a computer backpack, especially if the laptop already shipped with one (say, Dell XPS M1530)?

The more protection the better. (No pun intended.)

Alot of notebook backpacks/bags doesn't offer very good protection. A good sleeve will offer better protection.

I have the 1530 the Dell bag that came with my 1530, and I still use it and place it in my Messenger bag (it's large enough to hold).

It give added protection, and is always a + for me ;) :)

Whether you do a Backpack or messenger type bag or what ever, I would definitely do a sleeve(i.e. laptop in sleeve then the whole thing in a backpack/messenger bag. The sleeve helps to protect the paint/surface of the laptop from scratches and prevents crumbs and other crap from getting into the laptop. In addition it is an added layer of protection. The backpack obviously gives the extra cushioning and space to carry additional stuff like your mouse, power adapter etc...

Zeroshock's sleeve get very good user opinions and I have seen a few in person, they do indeed seem to provide excellent protection.

I agree with the statement that a sleeve + regular backpack is better than a "laptop" backpack.
