    bkup hardrive recomendation needed

    I want to backup both my laptop and desktop with the same external hardrive. Laptop is windows 7 home premium, the other is XP. What is it that these devices bkup besides my music, video, documents etc? Program files?
    Windows 7 provides a utility for backups, so I'm not sure whether to use that or the software that comes with the hardrives. Do I have that choice to use the external drives software or not?
    Which drives are most recommended for my use? Thanks for your help.
