I'm not sure if staples still has their deal where you are sent the value of the backpack before tax back in staples dollars. If you have stuff to buy at staples this is essentially receiving the backpack for the value of tax.

OP, you may want to consider a sleeve as well. The Swiss is a great backpack, but there are better general purpose packs out there. I only bring up the sleeve idea if you look at the REI Wraps. I have one for my EEE and 17". They are functional but have saved my butt numerous times I have dropped my EEE and such. It may be a bit easier for you, check 'em out. One suggestion is to bring your laptop to check that the height will work, other than that it is awesome. I generally carry my beast in its Asus backpack (generic brand?) for LAN parties, but for around campus or on a service call I just use the sleeve.

    the REI e-wrap looks ok.

    13.2" x 9.4" x 1.47" are the dimensions of the T400 with 9 cell battery

    the dimensions of the small e-wrap are 13.5 x 9.5 x 1.5 inches

i think the laptop would fit

i dont know if i would buy it or not yet

Are there any other sleeves/backpacks that would be good for a laptop?

The North Face bags are not bad either, particularly the surge. I got mines at Ebags, listed price was 115 but then they price match 110% so i found some small unheard of online store who was having a out of business sale and selling it for 70 and had them price match it and got like $50 bucks back, 115 - 70 x 1.1.

^Wow, nice deal. I definitely got my Surge for $100ish. It's a great backpack; it has a separate computer compartment.

I bought this for my MacBook and it is an awesome backpack. It feels very solid and not cheap, the place for you laptop is also nicely padded and soft. I usually have a couple books in mine with my MacBook and it holds everything just fine. It's a little expensive, but well worth it IMO.
