I was thinking of getting a laptop sleeve for my new laptop. I've seen some $5 ones on ebay but I've heard that some of those cheapo sleeves can scratch your laptop somehow. I've also heard that these Zeroshock ones are some of the best ones.

Are they really worth the $30 they cost? And how about the size? If the case is a few inches too tall, will it somehow mess up the laptop, like allow more space for it to move and get dents or something? My laptop is 14 inches but I may be able to get a 15-15.5 inch size case for half the price

In this, like in most things bag related, I would spend the money and get something that is stitched to last. If you're worried about scratches I would suggest picking one with a liner or a material that is scratch free like this:

    Customize A Bag - Timbuk2 Bags

I push timbuk2 stuff because I own it, and it's quality. Plus it's handmade, US made stuff. Support the economy!

I'll second the timbuk2 stuff. I've got a messenger i picked up back around 97 for school used it for 3 years of high school all of college carrying tons of books etc and still use it for various things and the bag is still in great condition. also have a laptop messenger of theirs thats running on some 5+ years old and the thing looks new which is amazing considering im using it every day. i now own a few other things made by them but those two are definately the most used/abused of what i have and theyre both in great shape. the bags are built to last.

Tom Bihn's brain cell is pretty awesome. Its just about bullet proof. If you want to go over kill on protection, go smart alec + braincell

I'm sure that Wenger bag would do the job just fine. I'm still going to push the Timbuk2 sleeve, but in the end mate, as long as it's got some padding and it's a non scratch material on the inside it'll work just fine I'm sure.

timbuk2 sleeves, or at least the one i got, is much bigger on the outside and makes my laptop look much bigger, which i hate. the reason is that the seam protrudes 1cm outside on the edges. it just does not look good. it has very good quality though, but i'm just not happy i spent that much money on it given its looks.

on the other hand, i have a ZeroShock III sleeve for my 12.1" laptop, and it is wonderful. top quality, top protection. too bad it does not fit my new laptop.

The zeroshock i was looking at (Zeroshock III) is actually a bit bigger than my laptop is (it's the 15.4" sleeve, laptop is 14"), but I can get it for half the price of a normal Zeroshock sleeve.

    Laptop dimensions: 13.5 x 9.6 x 1.1 inches
    Sleeve dimensions: 15.9" x 11.9" x 1 inch

Would my laptop fit in this, or would it maybe be too bulky?

I would also like to check if my laptop (Asus N55SF) would fit into this Zeroshock III 15.4" sleeve.

    Laptop dimensions: 37.9 x 26.1 x 3.75 cm
    Sleeve dimensions: 37.5 x 27.5 x 4 cm

    anyone?

    Thanks alot.

From what sellers have told me a 3 or 4 mm bigger in any direction should be OK... it just compresses the foam a bit more. Really, those braincell cases are better and provide the most accurate measurements too.

Youd be fine with this, and since your laptop is slightly thicker it'd probably hold it from sliding around inside it too.

Thank you! I was about to purchase a Zeroshock III after days of frustrating back and forth emails about actual sizes (no one can give me the same answer about the external dimensions) The Tom's is so much better.

Zeroshock cases really do a great job of protecting your laptop. I would advise against buying the white ones, though, as they become discolored/dirty extremely quickly. I stuck mine inside my Timbuk2 Q most of the past year, and now the white case is getting slight tinges of red here and there. And let's not even begin with the dirt (as I use the Zeroshock as an insulator between my laptop and foreign surfaces haha).

Note: yes, I have tried cleaning it. XD

The Zeroshock IV sleeves are the ones that go with the new laptop sizes (16:9 screens iso 16:10) I have a Zeroshock III 15,4" for my Precision M4400 and a size smaller for the E6400. If you want actual protection this easily beats all the nylon sleeves and all others i've seen so far. The memory foam inside is a great shock absorber and the rubber outside makes it (splash) waterproof and also stops hits from sharp corners and such. Ofcourse it's also a bit thicker than regular sleeves but those aren't really much more than dustcovers IMHO.
I'm getting a IV for the Vaio S15 that's on it's way to me :)
