Hi.
I'd like to buy XBox controller to use with my laptop (I don't have an Xbox 360).
Do I need to buy the wireless receiver separately?
I've noticed an item called "Microsoft Wireless Windows Gamepad" does it have the receiver already?
Is there any difference between the black (Xbox Elite) and White versions of the controller (other than the color obviously)?
-
Since no one seems to know, I had to google a bit.
"Microsoft Wireless Windows Gamepad" is the exact same XBOX 360 controller just rebranded.
Both (as they're really the same) can plug to PC via USB for wired play, but for wireless, you have to buy the adapter, which I did and you can play wirelessly
Supposedly it also works in x64, I hope it's true. -
So can I use the black controller with the adapter or only the ones that are advertised for windows?
-
It's the same thing just marketed to different people. All you need is the adapter, the controller dosen't matter. Go for a Black one, or even one of the colored ones.

There is NO difference between the Black Elite, the White Version, or the Halo Edition. Same goes for the Pink version, Blue Version etc.
As for connecting to your laptop there are 2 routes you can go on this one.
1. An adaptor. There are small Microsoft USB adaptors which will plug into your laptop and allow your laptop to wirelessly connect to the controller.
2. Xbox 360 controllers marketed specifically for computer use. They are corded and are a bit cheaper then Wireless controllers.
NOTE: An Xbox 360 Plug and Play Kit will NOT work
Good Luck! Let me know if you would like some links! -

The one that says "for pc" is exactly the same as the normal controller. Only difference is that it cost more and comes with a drivers disk.
XP you can download the driver easy.
Vista will install the driver for you.
As for wireless you can buy the normal wireless controller first (or if you already have one) and then buy the wireless adapter for pc separate.
Or they sell the whole thing together as a kit. I have two of them brand new unopened still since I used the wired model and a wireless wiimote as controllers. -
How did you get your wiimote recognized by your bluetooth? I've been trying to do that with my sixaxis ps3 controller but I just gave up and have been looking for some other controller since.
