I'm probably going to go for the mx518, and I'm wondering if I should get any sort of special mouse pad to go with it- any suggestions?

I used a friend of mine's Func, was awesome.

Me, I'm still using a grey (with a slight brownish stained tint, and a few splashes of coke) rubber/cloth pad... probably 15 years old. I'm cheap, what can I say?

The icemat is amazing but is annoying if there are crumbs on it because it makes / feels like it scratches the glass (but it doesn't leave any marks).

I also like the Func matts,

I use an XTrac Pro HS with an MX510 and I'm happy with it.

I looked it up and it apparently only costs $10. I didn't remember since I bought it years ago.

I remember when optical mice first came to the market, the big marketing hype was that you no longer needed a mouse pad.

I'm old school, I like everglide mouse pads...too bad they do longer sell their classic style anymore

I used Ratpadz Gaming Surface "Mouse Pad"

    http://canadacomputers.com/index.php?do=ShowProduct&cmd=pd&pid=002304&cid=PE.13

It got bumpy surface for better tracking. I've read reviews and used it myself. I think it's a great mouse pad for a cheap price. Most gaming mouse pads cost 40+ but this one is really cheap and it's hard surface so it will last long as well as easy to clean. However if you don't like hard surface mouse pad and prefer something flexible then this isn't really your choice.

I remember being aghast back in the 70's when I found my grandfather using these as placemats. People still do crap like this? :p

I ordered an Icemat (because I'm a sucker) and it should be arriving at my house as we speak. It seemed like a waste to spend so much money on a gaming mouse and then use it on a 6 year old mousepad I got from a hospital for free (apparently that's adequate consolation for sitting in a waiting room for several hours with a broken wrist...). I can't wait to try it out. Before buying I did a lot of research and it seems that the two most popular mousepads are the Icemat (hard) and the Steelpad QcK+ Heavy (soft).

Wait, where the hell is my hospital issued mousepad? :( I spent 6 hours waiting for them to sow my damned finger back together and because of that wait time there was a lot of nerve damage.

Icemats are pretty nice, but I'm pretty cheap.

That being said, my Icemat came yesterday and it is AWESOME. Forget gaming, I just want to sit there and move the mouse around on the pad.

I've used every good mousepad that exists in the market. There are two obvious choices than stand head and shoulders above the rest:
    the Func archetype and icemat

The archetype slightly edges out the icemat because you don't have to clean it so often and it doesn't make such annoying sounds.

Remember to buy teflon mouse skates.

I've found that the sounds are really not that bad. With the pad surfers correctly applied to my Fatal1ty 2020 it's not really even noticeable, especially when gaming with headphones. If you're looking for a mousepad this high quality, you should be playing with headphones anyway so theoretical white noise from the mousepad won't really matter. That's my two cents.

I have a Func Surface 1030. I've used it for years and it works great. Neat thing is you can flip it over for a slick or a rougher side. It comes in a neat metal tin too. :p

Steelpads are pretty nice. I have an exactmat and a Steelpad S&S, and I prefer the steelpad.
