A friend gave me this s-video/coaxial adaptor cable today. The s-video side fits into my laptop, but what's the point of it?

It coverts S-Video to the regular analog (yellow) video jack.

are the extra pins for audio output then? If only four are used for the video the others should have a purpose right? Just curious...

I actually have that Dell cable...and it does support audio. That was why I asked ya because I was wondering if it might also work on my HP. I suspected the Dell thing was specific to Dell.

The Dell cable has a output end with another SVIDEO female socket then an RCA composite video out as well as a single RCA audio out. I have no idea how it works beyond that though. I think the Dell support forums have details somewhere in them but thankfully I never need to deal with those boards again...unless of course Dell gains my favor in the furture.... ;)

Thanks a bunch for the help in understanding the way these work!!

Yes, except that DIN is analog anyway. It wasn't like S-Video was sending out a digital signal.

Yes - basically the point is that, except that there isn't ever a need to use the cable in your image unless your TV is so old it doesn't even have an S-Video input. TV's that don't have an S-Video input are VERY old at this point, and need to start getting phased out for government reasons. Yeah, these TVs are not going to be able to view cable TV at some point in the near future.

Took me a while to find the darned thing...I'll get a pic when I can. Until then here is the part number: 044CTV

From my hunting around the web I might never have used it afterall. I would swear the paperwork that came wiith it said it did audio too...and that I had actually used the danged thing. But from my hunting it does not...I also tested it and well there is NO AUDIO from the cable by simple (just connect it and wait for something to start smoking) testing...

As I recall Dell sent this to me about 6-8 months after I bought my i5000 but it might have been the i8500 I just don't recall for certain.

    ;)
