What's the difference between these two?

    Hi all,

I understand what an external hard drive is. This to me looks like a the box of an external hard drive, without the hard drive:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817193029&ATT=17-193-029&CMP=AFC-C8Junction

Because of the rebate it's essentially free - you need to pay for shipping.

So....what is the difference, if any, between buying an external hard drive and buying this box-type thing and popping in a much cheaper internal drive? Less sturdy? Noisier? Seems like a better deal.

An external drive is pretty much a hard drive inside a pretty enclosure. What you are looking at is just the enclosure in which you can put in your own hard drive.

So you can either buy an external drive, or buy an internal drive and an external enclosure and in the end you'll have the same exact thing.
