Preferably just a microphone that hooks to your ear... I have a really good speaker system hooked up to the computer and would rather use that for all of the audio versus a headset. Suggestions? Thanks in advance!

you might be able to just look for a stand alone mic that clips to your shirt or something or one that just sits on your desk.

Your missing half the point, A headset is not just for your listening enjoyment, its for all of the people listening to you.

If you use speakers with a microphone there is a good chance you will get reverb, feedback, or loop the game sound.

Its the most terrible thing and I just hated when I used to play WoW and we had a few people with a setup like that and they wonder why I never listened to them. Its because I muted them.

Now there are some ways to circomvent it some, use a software noise filter the x-fi cards I have can do that, it reads the output from your soundcard and thus knows what sound it needs to take away from what it hears, but its not perfect. Also just dont turn up your speakers loud.

My setup was advanced but very rewarding. Like you I prefer my speakers to headphones for most things because the quality (and the bass) but I knew I could not have them loud and use vent. Also even if I just wanted to hear others and not talk Id have to nearly turn down the game volume all the way to be able to make out what people were saying.

So I had Plantronics DSP500's at the time, they run off usb so they have there own soundcard.

Since my system had two soundcards I was able to play the game on my big speakres, and have vent speech go to my headphones. It was a win/win. I could hear clearly again what people were saying and enjoy the nice speakers.

I can do this setup now still since I have a soundcard & onboard soundcard with my analog AudioTechnica A700's

Also map a key to mute your windows sound when you push to talk (always use push to talk) so that you dont get the reverb I was talking about.

Best mic is the Zalmans clipon, its made to clip to your headphone cord. Its very good quality and not very expensive.

Thanks for the suggestions all! Any thoughts on a headset that has just a single speak that will hook to the ear with maybe a boon off from that for voice? And a way to have just ventrilo audio go to that headset speaker? I don't have two sound cards, so not sure how this would be done?

Another option is to use a USB headset. I have my game audio playing through my speakers and my vent audio through my USB headset.

I use the Rocketfish USB headset from BestBuy. I think it goes for $29.99 now. Its very comfy and works well for vent use. It might not be for everyone since the headphone part covers the entire ear.
