Just wondering what kind of power drain a typical USB mouse would have...

Look at the label on the bottom. Does it say anything?

I've just looked at a few in my collection:

    5V 100mA (=0.5W) three mice
    5V 50mA (=0.5W) one mouse
    3V 100mA (=0.3W) one mouse
    5V 50mA (=0.25W) one mouse
    One mouse no data

The last one is an old Logitech mouse with a ball. The others are all optical.

I suspect that the current ratings are the maximum and the actual is less. Some of the optical mice include sensors which reduce the power when there is no movement while features like an illuminated wheel must increase the power drain slightly.

I tend to use to use the touchpad when I'm on battery, but it will only make a few minutes difference.

    5V, 100mA..... 0.5W then.
Once again you answer my question John, thanks!
I assume that would be the figure at maximum power usage (ie, moving constantly, scrolling etc).

Our interests align in this area.

Yes, the power rating would be the maximum and may be generous. Look carefully at your mouse and see if the red light dims if there is no movement. This will save some power. Some do and some don't.

I look forward to the day when a laptop can easily get 8-10hours from a single charge without having to squeeze every last drop of power from things!

Interestingly enough, the wireless dongle for my Mouse and Keyboard is 5V, 55mA....

Could anybody tell me the details for the Logitech VX & VX Nano?
