Hi, i'm interested in getting a 7 self-powered USB 2 HUB, but there are few things that bother me.

is it OK to split USB in such manner? i mean 1 HUB for 7 devices... would it distract the operation of other things plugged into it? such as because of too much stuff using the USB bandwith, or electrical interference because of the ups and down in electrical currents/bandwith,etc.. for example; if i were to utilised all 7 USB for high speed external-hdd (self-powered) data transfer simultaneously.

is there something bad about USB hub i should know about?

and another thing... what good USB HUB should i get?

btw, i'm planning to plug; -two(2x) 3.5" external HDD
    - a logitech G5 mouse
    - a keyboard
    - and an external soundcard
    - a pda dock
    and ocasionally
    - an ipod
    - usb stick/s
    - 1.8" micro HDD/s

When using 7 devices, its best to use a USB hub with a dedicated power supply. Things like docks and keyboards, and mouses should no problem.

Everything should be fine, but I imagine finding a 7 port is quite difficult. Also, the Inspiron 8400, if the ports are USB 1.1 and not USB 2.0 you'll run into some serious speed issues.

As mentioned, it's better to look for one that isn't USB powered, as the USB hub will not work properly at times, due to the lack of power.

by self-powered USB HUB i meant that; the USB hub has its own power adaptor, not the one that is powered by USB port (bus-powered) that it plug itself into.

also, of course i will atach it to USB 2.0 port.

I picked up this one from zzf about 2 weeks ago. No problems at all.

    My Hub

Let's see, I have 1 mouse, 1 keyboard, a printer, 3 sync cables for different devices, and then my monitor, which has a four port USB HUB in it that currently has a external HD running through it. I haven't experienced any problems. It is a very very nice hub.
