I'm on the quest for the ultimate travel bag (which doesn't mean mobile office bag). What I look for doesn't seem to exist yet in full detail: a totally traditional travel compartment (clothes etc) with an attached, detachable, slim, notebook bag.

I find many Business Bags with notebook compartments, lots of office storage instead of just room for clothes, travel bags with notebook bags inside etc ... but that's all not the thing I look for. My ideal bag should be:

    - Sturdy, good quality soft shell. If it costs a few hundred to provide that quality, no issuea, but not some Louis Vuitton idiot price. Needs to have a telescope handle and two sturdy, reasonably large wheels (i.e. not silly, tiny).

    - Sized to be allowed in all air cabins (even easy jet) and providing the maximum of room, i.e. rectangular. Specifically not looking for a backpack or similar sized things, that do not provide maximum volume.

    - A completely normal clothes/travelgear compartment, if possible with zippable no-wrinkle shirt area, but offering maximum, empty room ... there should be no loss of space due to "business"-designs inside

    - And now the crux: A thin, but still protective notebookbag attached to it, completely detachable and security-friendly, i.e. unfolding with x-ray friendly materials

    - TSA approved locks

    - Good design and comfort features like an outside bag for a magazine etc won't hurt.

Lots of whishes, but I need *exactly* that, but can't find it :/

Budget would be a key factor I guess :)

I am looking myself for the same thing and the range is quite large, from $50 to $500.

My suggestion to you guys... go to the FlyerTalk forums (specifically, the Travel Products sub-forum). It is a forum dedicated to frequent flyers, where they share their experiences with other frequent travellers.
    FlyerTalk Forums

I would recommend that you start looking for two separate products (roll-on bag, and a laptop shell), because I don't see much benefit trying to find both products packaged into a single purchase. Just about every roll-on bag has a little "hook" or "strap" (sometimes called a T-Bar) on it that lets you attach a laptop bag.

People on FlyerTalk generally seem to regard the following brands / products well:

    * In the $100 range, hands-down the Kirkland Signature roll-on sold by Costco. Sturdy, durable, lots of space, and lifetime warranty. I flew 136,000 miles so far this year using this bag.

    * In the $200 - $250 range, the two brands that are most highly regarded are Briggs & Riley, and TravelPro. If you notice, all of the pilots and flight attendants you see use TravelPro gear.

    * In the $500 range, you're looking at Tumi. Tumi has a historical reputation of being high-quality; but that reputation has started sliding down in the past few years, as they have changed their warranty / repair policies away from lifetime coverage.

I also recommend Rimova in the high end range if you feel like burning cash :)

Cash is no problem (as long as we're not talking paying for just name like a louis vuitton piece of dudah). But I need all those options in :)

good point :) I think it is real difficult to find what you are looking for. I have been looking myself for a while and have not pulled the trigger as there is always something that bothers me or just is not right...

Not bad, Finges, although an interior Notebook bag. Foldable/Zippabl outsie would be nicer. And: Not available in Europe :/

Agree, the outside attachment would be nice. It's kinda weird that this is not easy to find, as anyone doing 1-3 day b-travel would love/need this.

I would expect that anyone doing business travel would also have a briefcase or additional bag? It would make more sense to me to travel with a suitcase style carry on and a thin/light/TSA Friendly laptop brief... one that can slide onto the pullout handle on the suitcase.

Something along the lines of: Triload-XF Shoulder Case | Brenthaven.com for the laptop....

Must be one piece, therefore the need for it being attached by zipper etc. Many airlines strictly allow only just one piece of carry on bag. Some will meanwhile overlook an additional really thin laptop bag (as they do allow an additional ladies bag) ... but many do not. Of course I can buy any sleeve and stuff the laptop somewhere into the suitcase, but that's not very practical, hence the need for something more sophisticated, while it remains a normal trave suitcase for me, not a business trolley with little space for clothes and more space for documents.

The Caselogic is not a bad solution though for the time being.

Really? That is different from my experience. Interesting. I want a one piece simply for convenience. To my knowledge, but I travel 70% long haul, you can take 1 Carry on + 1 Laptop bag regardless of size more of less (clearly not a huge backpack), but any 15" or 17: bag with some additional space is ok. Laptop does not count as carry on to my knowledge.

What airlines and routes are you flying?

Nice to hear ... I am not basing that on much experience, just what I read on the airlines Websites and a few reports from people. I usually fly inside Europe, small city hop trips. Last time it was Swiss. No idea, what they'd have said, I just didn't dare bringing a secondary laptop bag. but I agree with you: The onebag Approach is so nice.

Currently I caught myself even thinking about an Air Boss ... totally different. But I still am questing for the best rollable thing, since I have some issues with my neck and do not like carrying much on those (for my neck relatively) long airport walks. it is intrigueing, however, how much space and options you gaing by not having all the roller chassis.

I dunno, I would personally only do rolling, simply so you don't have the weight. I actually think Tuhin has one that would qualify, I'm gonna have a look later.
Though Rimowa and Tuhin both charge incredible premiums. I kinda refuse to pay that much for a bag (though I may end up with Rimowa's larger suitcases simply as they last/life-time warranty).

    Revival!

I have found the ultimate travel bag and cabin trolley combo. Not here yet and only have the laptop bag so far. Will have to wait for the next trip to buy it (had max luggage last time so could not buy, but I checked it out and it is perfect!)

Briggs & Riley -> Verb Series -> 20" Cabin trolley + Move Business Case

    Perfect setup.

    Cheers~
