I finally ordered a laptop! [ :)][ :D][8D][ :p][ ;)][|)] As you can probably see, I am very happy! I will sometimes hook my lappy up to a car or airplane vua A/C adapter, and I was just wondering if a surge protector is necessary to protect your laptop. I've heard that sudden surges in energy from a car can fry your laptop, and seeing as this is my first laptop ever, I really want to protect it and have it last. If any of you have any info or opinions, that would be great. Thanks!

P.S. If you do need a surge protector, does anyone know where I can get one for cheap? And/or a place where you can get a car/airplane A/C adapter for cheap?

BTW I got the Battalion SL (MiTAC 8355) from ibuypower(despite some negative comments about the company, its resellerrating was very high, much higher than Dell, HP, and such.), configured like this for $1840.15:

    Memory ( 1024MB [512MB x2] DDR-333 PC-2700 [Notebook Memory] Major Brand )
    Video Card ( Mobility 128MB ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 256-bit 3D Video )
Hard Drive ( 60 GB 7200rpm ATA-100 Super Slim Notebook Hard Drive )
    CD-RW/DVD-RW Drive ( 8x DVD-ROM & 24X16X24 CD-RW Combo Drive [SL-Series] )
Sound Card ( 3D Wave Stereo Sound Onboard )

Hi.I've never used a surge suppressor for my notebook either when in the car or otherwise. I don't think you really need on. If you decide to buy a surge protector, don't get a cheap on I do know a bad one can make things worse than none at all.

Good Luck opn your purchase from Ibuypower, keep us updated on your experience and let us know if it arrives on time and it's condition and your overall opinion of them. I know many of us are interested in finding out.

    Radio Shack, CompUSA, Walmart, Kmart.

Make sure the fuse removable. This way, if you do get a surge and the fuse blows, you replace the fuse and not the entire surge protector.

I've used APC's mobilbe protector, but gave up on it. I don't really feel like it's needed.

thanks for the replies guys. If I find a surge protector for cheap that seems like its good quality I might buy it, seeing as this is my first laptop, I am sure I'll be really overprotective when it finally comes.
