Just bought an Ipod Touch and when I asked the "genius" at the store if it would work with Vista 64bit and he said yes. Of course to my surprise when I plugged it in it said that the ipod cannot be used because of the 64bit OS. So now im stuck with an Ipod touch for nothing. My answer to this is downgrading my system to 32bit but i wanted to know if I did could i leave my 4gb RAM in my system. I heard that XP32 runs slower when 4gb are in the system than it does with 2gb

Well vista 32 bit can only use around 3070mb ram. The rest is used for memory addressing I think. If I was you I would take the ipod touch back and get an archos 605 wifi!

They'll waive the restocking fee if it was sold under false pretenses.

I bought an iPod touch a few weeks ago and I failed to realize it was not 64-bit compatible too . . . I run XP Pro x64 on my desktop. I have to put all my music on my laptop, which runs 32-bit XP, to sync.

It's unfortunate that the Apple store employee misinformed you, but I doubt he did it on purpose. Maybe they assume it will work with everything . . .

Just leave the 4GB of RAM in if you are going to 32-bit. More RAM = better.

I think it is funny that Apple runs those commercials that equipment is not compatible with Vista and people are downgrading because of it. In this example you are acually considering downgrading becaue of Apple hardware which I find rather funny.

I would check the outside of the pacaging to see if it says that it is not compatible with 64 bit OS and if it did not then take it back and REFUSE to pay the restocking fee.

Thats just my 2 cents though.

    Wow... that is interesting.

Funny cause it's compatible with 64 bit Leopard :p
Hopefully Apple will release a driver for that one day.

But yar, take it back. I doubt they'll make you pay restock since you were misinformed.

I doubt they'll charge a restocking fee... explain that their "genius" said it would work with 64-bit and it didn't... and make a big loud stink about how they lied to you (so that all the other customers can hear) if they insist on charging the fee.

But if you decide to keep it, you could install 32-bit Windows on a separate partition and use it just for iTunes. That's kind of good anyway, due to all the stupid background processes iTunes runs even when you're not using it (thereby eating up system resources). You should still be able to access the files on your main partition when using the 32-bit partition. (And no, 4 gb RAM won't make 32-bit Windows any slower.)

Yeah, go to the Apple Store and just talk to them. The Apple Store employees usually go real deep into satisfying the customer, so if you tell them what happened they'll most likely let you refund it without restocking.

no, more ram will never make an OS slower. 32bit vista can only use a max of 3.7gigs. But, your graphics ram is also deducted from the total. so, I agree, you can always create a small partition for the 32bit os and sync with that.

Toss out the touch, And get a Cowon. Get a D2 if you want the touch feature, or a Q5W if you feel like going wild with it.

The iPod Touch is a flash device. Why didn't Apple create the Touch as a USB Mass Storage device?

Seems ridiculous for a flash device to require proprietary drivers to connect.

The Touch is recognized by x64 windows, but the only thing you can do is look at the dcim folder. Or maybe thats just mine? (Jail Broken 1.1.1) I just got a copy of xp and ran it in vmware, worked like a charm.

My idea was to partition my HDD with 64 and 32bit on it. I would never downgrade just for Apple which is why I didn't buy a Mac :) . It's ok I returned it telling them that I was told it would work with Vista 64bit and some "genius" said it was, but he was shut up quickly when his boss told him it wasn't. They waived the restock fee thankfully and instead I got an Ipod video 30gb which works flawlessly. Thanks for all the comments :)
