I've been looking around for an insurance program against theft and accidental damage for a laptop and ran across a company called SAFEWARE. It's kinda costly but my son is going to college away from home (approx. 2,350 miles). Has anyone had any experiences with this firm or have heard any good/bad comments about them? Can't find any reviews/ratings on the web, please respond if you have any info. Thanks

Check to see if your homeowner's insurance will cover something like that. Ours did, and at no extra cost.

I haven't had aany experience with insurance for laptops, but my friend insured his iPhone through State Farm, with "Article Insurance".

I have no knowledge on what's covered/what's not covered by article insurance, but it may be something for you to look into.

I'll give it a look, think I may get a 3 year service of Safeware and let you guys know in the event that I need to use the service, seems to be a lack of information in this regards, wish there was a sticky thread devoted to information like this.

If you haven’t already bought the notebook, then there are similar programs by some of the notebook manufacturers as well, i.e : DELL Complete Care, HP Total Care. I got 3 year Complete Care on my notebook (Accident + Theft + international warranty) for around $150 extra.

If you have homeowners insurance you should be able to add it on for a nominal fee. You can add it as a Person Articles Policy - wheareas...you would have no deductible and would get replacement cost/value.

Or you can add as part of your main policy and you would pay the same deductible (normally $500). I suggest doing it separate as a Personal Articles Policy ~ to avoid a deductible. And, note all insurance companies are different how they *underwrite* to provide coverage, for these sorts of things.

Yes, you are correct, Harpy. You can add it as a Personal Articles Policy, no deductible needed.

Each insurance company is different on how they phrase the Insurance coverage for something like a laptop, camera etc.

And, it's not a high cost either. :D

    Cin ;) :)

Already got the laptop in September, but due to circumstances, I will be able to get a protection plan for free (have like a $300 budget) from the school I attend. Due to this I was seeking the best type of post-buy insurance I could get.

For a 3 year $1,600 coverage with safeware it would be around $274, that does not include international (to my knowledge since I put down I only travel US and Canada).

Would it be harder to put it on a pre-existing homeowners or other insurance, would it not raise my premiums and other charges (spill over) if I make a claim if the laptop is stolen?

    Thanks for the continued help.

Has anyone filed a claim and if so, how do they factor in depreciation? Thanks.
