I'm in the market for a 3-in-1 machine stated in the title above, the emphasis is on scanner quality and readily available cartridges which don't cost a fortune to replace at every turn.

I'm not sure this is the right forum for this kind of request, but I know nothing about this field of peripherals and could use some help.

I have an Epson Stylus NX625 AIO (all-in-one) that's been good for my at-home use. If you're doing things in a more-professional capacity, look into their WorkForce line. They're reasonably priced, both as a unit and for ink. You can typically find black replacement carts for less than $15.

The scanning quality has to be quite good since I'm looking to use the machine to preserve records for university work, but it doesn't need to be top of the line since it's primarily used at home.
Which currency are you referring to for the ink cart?
How old is the Stylus? One thing I'm not planning to do is buying a fairly obsolescent model and then paying a fortune in replacement ink cartridges when the line is phased out of production within the year.

Hence why I pointed you to the WorkForce line. It's like the HP Probook to the Stylus line's Pavilion.

Discussion of the Stylus is irrelevant as that's not a model you should be considering. In any case, as the WorkForce is geared as a more professional machine, it should have a longer shelf life.

Consider the Brother MFC-J series printers. Excellent value both in initial cost and operating cost. Lowest cost per page. Scanning is excellent for documents of any type and good for pictures. I personally own the MFC-J625DW and use it to electronically archive everything paper. It has a 20-sheet ADF atop the flatbed scanner. Printer cartridge cost and lifespan, and printer warranty (2 years) are much better than HP or Canon.

I've been warned off the Brother series of printers by anecdotal accounts, at any rate I'm looking at either a Canon or a HP 3-in-1 machine.

I'll need to dig a little more before I get a better idea of what's ideal for me.

Do you need color and inkjet/laser?

Colour printing is somewhat optional, I'm not going to print photos so whichever inkjet/laser combination is cheaper and more efficient with the cartridges would have my vote.
I'm primarily looking for something with decent scanning quality since I'll scan more material than I'll print.

I've owned both Canon and HP AiOs and can't recommend either. The former broke down right after the warranty expired. The latter would jam constantly and required ink that was far more pricey than any other brand. Absolutely no problems with Epson.

Epson all-in-1 machines will have to included in the list for consideration then.

    Lexmark any good nowadays?

I have an Epson WorkForce WF-3540DTWF at around £150 , it has an automatic document feeder, double sided printent, fax, scan to jpeg or pdf built in the printer, I bough a set of refillable cartridges and it works great.
