I sometimes want to game at night with my Asus laptop when my girlfriend is asleep but I try not to obstruct the back vents. I've been propping the back vents up with 2 empty xbox game cases just to have the back risen off the bed because I know beds sink the laptop down a bit. Anybody use a chill mat? Is the power draw from the fans on the chill mat enough to hinder performance?

I used to use cooling pad to game on my laptop on my lap.You can always use a USB AC outlet adapter so the cooler doesn't have to draw power from your laptop. Although I didn't see any difference in performance.

maybe get a cooler with stand, or a laptop stand is enough. There is some better looking and larger stand but I cannot find them.

The power draw is minimal using USB. Like Kaze mentioned, just having your laptop elevated on a solid surface will be enough to allow proper airflow. If the cooler is effective, it will keep the bottom of your laptop relatively cool, but don't expect dramatic drops in GPU or CPU temps. You may also want to look at adding taller rubber feet to the back of your laptop to help lift it a bit more so fans are not obstructed. Something like this:

There's already a good thread going about cooling pads:
