Anyone know of a solution that cleans greasy keyboards? My asdf jkl; and spacebar keys are all shiny. It looks like they have grease on them. I tred using a damp cloth but this does nothing. My keyboard is black and it's very noticible. Any ideas/products would be appreciated. Thanks!

i assume this is from dirty, oily fingers. i just scratch it off with a fingernail and then get the vacuum cleaner.
-
That really doesnt work because my keyboard has a sort of texture surface so trying to scratch it off only spreads it.

oh, i really can't help then. because i am so bad, i will give your thread a plug in my sig. there you go, thats my contribution.

I have never found a solution to actually cleaning one (that worked). First step is preventative maintenance. Go to www.shaggymac.com and buy a screen protector. I used one for 3 months, no shiny keys. Lost it, two weeks later, shiny keys. Step two, if you do have shiny keys, replace the keyboard and start with step one.

The grease from your skin can be easily eliminated by alcohol (or other non polar substances). You can apply it with a toothpick and a piece of gauze. Be careful not to spill any, so the interior doesn't get damaged (it evapores fairly quickly in most enviroments). Check your manual to see if it's warned against of something before proceding, too.
I also found a step by step guide to thoroughly clean a notebook keyboard.

Hope any of this helps! -
word of caution: the printing on the keyboard may be rubbed off if you uses the wrong chemical solvent.
if you must, look for IPA (iso-propanol-alcohol). this is usually used (with moderation) by manufacturer to clean plastic parts. however, try not to use it too excessively as it too can damage the keyboard.
i much prefer a clean, slightly wet cloth which has been dabbled in soap water ... -
get a can of compressed air.

I'll go and buy some rubbing alcohol tomorrow. Will that suffice? -
Alcohol commonly used for medical purposes should do the job of eliminating the grease from the keys, yes. Remember to check if it won't damage your keyboard in any way (probably not, but confirming it won't hurt you either). Although alcohol evaporates rather quickly in most environments, be careful not to spill any (as I mentioned before, a toothpick and a gauze should do the job).
Tell us how it went afterwards =).
