I currently have one 500gb seagate in an enclosure, its just about full, so i figure i'll just start building my RAID protected collection. only trouble is i'm pretty uninformed as to what my options are for a fair balance of affordability/reliability. The first (and only so far) option I've stumbled accross is this addonics tower.

    http://www.addonics.com/products/raid_system/ast4.asp
    model # ST5XHPM
    more info
Is this the right setup to go with? Any other brands/devices or even alternative storage methods to consider?

My plan is to buy something like this and another 500 gb hdd soon, then add more as I have the cash to blow. Ultimately, I hope to end up with a sweet little protected array of sweetness. ;)

    thanks

Since you'll be adding disks over time, you'll be wanting JBOD (Just a Bunch of Disks) so you don't have to move all your data, rebuild an array with new drives, and then move all your data back. That's what the Addonics offers, which is good. I can't speak for the quality of Addonics, though.

Have you considered NAS? With such a large amount of storage, it would be a shame not to have it network accessible without sharing it out from another machine.

Yeah, unless you're using it as a working directory for video editing, or need fast database access, NAS sounds like the best option.

    There, did that help? :D
