I am cooling to buy a laptop cooling pad such as the Targus Chill Mat. I have an Acer Aspire 5000 and I found one certain cooling pad: http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0665000FS10060434&catid=#

However the fans on that cooling pad do not target where most of the laptop heat is coming from. I have included a diagram illustrating what I mean.

I was wondering if anyone can recommend a cooling pad under $50, that will be effective and that will target the area that had the greatest heat. Currently my laptop reaches about 45C to 55C on Performance on Demand while undervolted. Also since it being radically hot in Toronto, my room temperature has increased exponentially so I think a cooling pad will help take down the heat.

Also if possible I would like to have the hard drive location cooled as well. Thats labelled as 1 in the diagram.

    Here are the specs:
    Acer Aspire 5000
    AMD Turion 64 ML-30
    Windows Vista
    RMClock Settings: 4.0x - 0.875V, 8.0x - 1.050V
CPU temp range: 45C to 55C to the occasional 60C
Hard drive temperature 40C to 55C

Preferably something that can be found at Future Shop

Arguably the best notebook cooler that is available.

It literally cools the entire bottom of the notebook, note just certain spots (like all the other notebook coolers).

I forgot to mention, preferably something that can be found at Future Shop lol. Its cause I have a $100 gift certificate there, I'd rather use that for computer stuff than spend my other money.

I have that targus pad... Its junk. You can get better ones off ebay for 20$. Also, keep in mind the laptop sits 1/8" off the pad, so the fans dont need to be aimed DIRECTLY over the laptop fans.

Maybe aimed was a bad choice of words. I meant aligned. I want to have the fan aligned with the area that generates the most heat.

Also all the ones I'm seeing on eBay are ones that have 3 fans, they don't look like they would be aligned with my laptop. I need the fans to take heat from the centre of the bottom.

Also since its eBay I'm going with something more cheaper. (money-wise, yet still effective)

i gots the zalman...only cos the words cooling and zalman go so smoothly :p

anyways, yep i agree its better the alot of the others, top plate is aluminium, and the fans are located at the top of the unit. but when you turn it on, the air somehow actually blows evenly up thru all the holes you see in those pics.

also the fan switch adjustor is good, its not 2 buttons where u go high/low, but like a volume wheel thing so you can adjust it according to how fast(more noise)/slow (less noise). on that note fans really quiest, almost silent on min settings, and a faint whirl on high.

o and its got 2 usbs.

I would suggest this. Cheap, and has fans everywhere underneath so your probably covered. Wish i had my notebook right now to test it out.

There aren't any fans in the middle to blow cold air into. The area that generates the most heat in my laptop is the Northbridge and that is located in the center of the laptop. Its there in the pic in the first post.

The Zalman lowered my HDD and CPU temps 11C. You get what you pay for.

Huh... the coolerguys need to refresh their knowledge of the metric system. Contrary to what they claim the fan is certainly not "60m x 60m x 10m". You could cool a skyscraper with that kind of fan.

@TerranEmpire - I use an antec notebook cooler which I got for about 40.00. Now my fans are (facing laptop opened) in the upper left hand corner and middle right hand section. So what I did is put the laptop cooler down, the antec has 2 big exhaust fans, and then match the exhaust port from my laptop to the cooling intake on the antec cooler. You may not find the cooler that matches your exact lappy exhaust but you can turn it to match. Hope this helps! btw, the antec has 2 speeds and is very quiet and works great.

I have no experience with it but it looks iffy to me. On a desktop, it might be okay but I'm looking for something that I can put between the laptop and my lap. That thing looks like it can easily be broken if you are not careful because of loose clothing getting caught in the fans. It also looks like the weight of the laptop is transfered to the lap with too small a surface area and would end up being painful after a while.

Whichever one you get, don't get Targus. You could blow air into your laptop faster than that and the Targus would start breaking before you ran out of breath. =)
