I know there are loads of notebook cooler threads...my issue is the exact opposite. I have a Qosmio X505-Q893, it's thick and massive with huge vents, so temps have never been an issue with me.

However, my room is quite dusty, and I'm nervous that all that dust is getting into the laptop. I'm using compressed air, but I'd really rather the dust not get in at all.

Has anyone ever put a dust filter on their notebook? I'm thinking of maybe using the paper screen cover that came with the laptop, or maybe a fabric softener sheet.

    Thanks.

wouldn't that lessen the air flow as well going into your laptop?

I've seen modifications before that used those aquarium filters to protect their desktop intake fans from gathering dust. might work the same for your laptop.

Obviously some airflow will be impeded; again, this isn't for overheating laptops, just those in dusty environments.

This guy had the same idea and used used fabric softener sheets:

I'm trying it now, and I don't see any noticeable increase in temps. Just wondering whether there's a more elegant way to do this.

LOL, what about the big vents on the side and back there?

Dust free laptop is impossible I'll say. You have to cover up everything then.. You're keyboard, USB ports etc..

You can seal the whole thing together, I don't know if it will be useable tou..

Get a small air compressor (pancake or one of those tankless compressors) and blow ~40psi through the vents once every couple weeks. I do like the dryer sheet idea though, always wanted my notebook to smell like lavender while being less dusty!

well since its on the laptop cooler and not on the laptop itself my temps are still the same it made no difference other than the fact that i dont have to blow out the dust off of my lappy as often, and less dust=more stable temps

I hope you're kidding, or that's a massive fail on your part. The idea is stopping dust from getting IN, why would anyone care about the vents getting it OUT? The amount of dust in the ports and keyboard is miniscule in comparison, and any laptop built halfway decently won't have dust leaking inside from the keyboard...

    Well...
Yes, there is a massive fail, but that's not my post ;)

I got a Qosmio back in days, it is still collecting dust somewhere... I know how those are build, it was my first, and going to be my last Toshiba, ever. /Closed.

Now, what when your laptop is not running? You don't think that dust will get in through vents and get stuck when you power your laptop on, on it's way out? Then good luck.

You will prevent some dust getting in, you have it right there, but you'll not be able to get a dust free laptop by simply blocking air intakes with some kind of material.

If you really really care so much about your laptop, then why the hell not just blow the dust out every weekend or every month depending on your environment? I did that with my Qosmio the 2 years I used it as my main laptop, it was clean and dustfree everytime I opned it.

I did not clean my HP for about a year, and few days ago when I rebuild it to set it up as my HS (Home Server) it was still looking good. Ofcourse it had some dust in it, but holy cow it was like 2 in 100.

To say it my way, I would rather clean my laptop regularly, then blocking the air intakes. Not to mention that ugly white thing in bottom of your laptop. I carry my laptop with my every sinlge day, and it just does not look right.

How should I get it bypass the airport securty in Norway? They would throw me in jail before figuring it out :D

This is more geared towards desktops since most of us are portable, but I noticed far less dust collection on my desktop after putting one of those ionic air purifiers in my home office. Having 2 big dogs it helped cut down on the airborne dander and dust significantly, aside from the other benefits of air purifiers.
