I've noticed that my LCD gets keyboard marks in the center of the screen because my laptop is in my backpack a lot and I tend to carry a lot of books.

Is there some kind of consensus on LCD protector screens? Are they beneficial in cases like this? Is there one that's really recommended? I'd like to protect my LCD with minimal attachments (don't want huge coverings that dilute the quality of my vivid and crisp LCD or somehow distort the clarity). Any ideas?

I would say the best protection would be a better carrying case

use a microfibre cloth to cover your lcd when moving your laptop.
Simply by a microfibre rag from an automotive store, and fold it on the keyboard, so that when you close the lid, the keyboard touches the cloth, which than touches the LCD. It will help keep your screen protected.
You may also want to invest in a screen protector for your lcd. They are usually made out of a lightweight clear plastic film, which you can put over your lcd, so that the screen does not get damaged or dirty.

K-tron, where would I get a microfibre cloth that fits my notebook? Do you recommend a particular LCD cover or should the cloth be enough?

the cloth should be enough. You can get some large microfibre cloths at an automotive store. You can use anything I guess, as long as its a soft fabric.

Cheapest easiest fix is a single piece of computer paper between the keyboard and screen.

sorry nizzy, i'll have to disagree with you there...

i put a piece of paper tween my screen and keyboard and when i got home, i realized how "abrasive" the paper can be... it left nice scuff marks along the edge... lucky it was the paint, not the screen that got damaged...

I'd put some very soft thin "foampaper" in between. Don't know what it's called in english, but it's something that usualy is covered over a screen when you buy a new one.

i wouldn't wanna use anything that's glued or such, so if it's something like that, then no. Otherwise sure, why not!
