Is this a bad or good idea?

So, let me start from the beginning. I do love gamer laptops, desktop replacements to be precise but at the same time I'm a bit tired of how hard it is to upgrade components. I feel like it's more complicated every time, and much more expensive on the GPU side. A mobile RTX 2080 can't be find for less than $1.500 which is nuts and not worth it IMO.

So I was thinking for these same $1.500 I can probably build for myself a nice desktop PC, with a RTX 3080 + an i7 10700K. And get like a 200% improvement over the mobile RTX 2080 for the same cost. Ok, not I bad idea I thought, but then I get the same problem I always had with building a desktop PC, and the problem is I don't want to play games in front of a desktop! I'm 100% comfortable playing games in my bed with my laptop, BT headphones and PS4 controller. So I found this little piece of software that is actually a game changing for me! The software is called: Mouse without borders. MWB is a free litle software from Microsoft that allows you to seamless use the keyboard and mouse from PC A in to PC B..

So this is how I use MWB, I use the touchpad and keyboard from my laptop to control the mouse and keyboard from my desktop PC while my desktop PC is connected to my LED TV. I know for a fact that this work because I have a PC desktop at this moment which I have tested this plan. It's actually pretty cool, that with the mouse and KB from my latpop I control the desktop PC and using the LED TV as a monitor.

So everything seems to be great at this point, I mean, the plan would be next:

    1) step 1. launch the game from the desktop PC using the laptop touchpad and KB, while I'm comfortable in my bed as always. PS4 controller and headphones are BT so no need to get up the bed.
    2) step 2: play the game in my bed using the LED TV. Enjoy and be happy.

Now, there is a problem with my plan, and the problem is my LED TV is a 1080p 60 Hz tv, which makes absolutely no sense to have this huge moster PC RTX 3080 + i7 10700K to play at 1080p and 60 Hz. So I have to buy a new TV. Ok, this might be a problem because I can't for my life to find a relatively cheap 1080p 120 Hz TV. And when I say cheap I mean less than $500. I'm no willing to pay more than $500 for a 1080p 120Hz device. All I can find are monitors smaller than 32 inch which is also unacceptable because as I'm playing from from like 3 meters from the TV. 40 inch screen is the minimum size I'd take. I also see a lot of 4K TVs but most of them are 60 Hz with fake upscaling motion crap. I really really really prefer to play at 1080p and high frame rates than playing at 4K and >60fps.

So I was thinking... what about using this device:

this device is a thunderbolt 3 video capture. This device can do 1080p240Hz while recording, so instead of connecting the PS4 (like in this picture) to the video capture, I'd be hooking the desktop PC to the video capture and using my laptop's monitor which can go as high as 144 Hz through the tunderbolt 3 port. I wouldn't connect the HDMI out to the external monitor like in the picture. Apps like OBS can go full screen on previsualization mode, while using the video capture as video source.

So what do you think guys? is that a really bad idea or it could actually work? or anyone has a better idea to solve my problem?

Quick question, why don't you use a wireless keyboard instead of so much unnecessary hardware?

I could, but since I use the laptop a lot I rather take advantage of my laptop's mouse and keyboard, and not have with me my laptop in the bed, and wireless KB and probably a wireless mouse..... That's just too uncomfortable to me

With a wireless kb and a desktop pc attached to tv and console you won't be in need of the laptop at all, saves alot more space imo

You mean like ditch the laptop as a main computer? Well to be honest I'm so used to have the computer screen close to my face that using the TV as a 24/7 main screen would be a huge change to me a change that I'm not looking for at the moment. I'm totally fine with watching movies on the TV and playing games on the TV too, but as a main screen, that would be weird. Like I said the TV is at several inches from my bed (the place where I want to be when I'm in my room) and having the screen so far away for daily browsing/work use, it's a bit weird to me.

Yes, i'd ditch it and in your case as it seems you want to be in your bed theres alternatives, i.e. a arm that holds a tablet(surface aint bad) which you can maneuveur to the side or right infront of you whenever you need the closeup screen, addionally a tablet won't need space on you or your bed (which tbh is a bad place for a laptop these days anyway .. overheating and dirt comes to mind) Download.jpeg

That's not a bad idea at all, I mean if there is a way to route the screen power cable and HDMI cable inside the arm or something like that. Where you buy one of those?

I'd look up some reviews, my guess amazon probably has a dozen different of them and most likely you can either put a hdmi through or along the arm and just attach it with whatever you have

    Here at a quick glance

I need something a bit more powerful though, given I want to use a 20+ inch screen instead of a tablet.

Maybe something like this could work?:

Have you tried the Steam Link?, I've used it a couple of times and the input lag it's almost non noticeable.
