I hate the touch pad but most of the time I use my laptop I'm sitting in a van, so no flat surfaces for a mouse. Can anyone recommend a portable (smallish) solution?

    Trackball?

I LOVE my trackball, works great on a desktop, on my leg, on any surface large enough to balance it on.

Smallest is too large? In what regard, do you mean for placing in bag or something else?

    Just curious...

Those trackballs do look pretty good. I just wish they would make a smaller version.

For me, they seemed too big to haul around. And I thought the ball might fall out and get lost cause those kind of weird things happen to me. :)

But then when traveling with my NB, I tend to just use the touchpad. Or used to. On the Asus, it's so sensitive that I need to disable it to type. The MX610 that I got is probably just as large as a trackball.

Attach a wiimote to your pc :)

    Use it as a mouse.

    Yes, it can be done.

I actually have that one in my collection (saw it at Wal-Mart one time for cheap, thought it looked like a giggle) it's um... well a giggle! I certainly wouldn't use it for any type of precision operation, really depends what you want to do, if it's just basic screen navigation then it's fine (but then again so is the touchpad) if it's for FPS then don't bother.

Check out the mouse I reviewed a while back. I have a link to it in my signature. I love that little mouse. :D

Is there a website or something that'll teach you how to hook up the Wiimote to the PC? And I think there was a mouse Logitech a while back that functioned the same way; basically waving in air to move the cursor.

Yeah, that's what I remember seeing. For some reason, I remember it being a Kensington though. It was a while ago though, so no telling where the technology has gone.

My roomie order a tiny mouse from Shinza.com. I couldn't find them on their site, but when I emailed them they me an 800 number to call and I placed on order over the phone. It is about 3.5 inches in lengh and an inch wide. It's pretty small.
