Hi, I have an Inspiron 700m. I put it in my school bad today with a book or two (soft cover) and when I took it out it has scratches on the front of it !!! (Were the big Dell circle is behind the screen) One of them is very visible - I am so angry...BIG SCRATCH! Very very angry. I know, I need to put it in a case and not in my bag. Just some questions

    1) DO your laptops have scratches or am I the only one ? I feel like it's all ruined now...lol.

    2) Is there a way to get rid of scratches? Any way? (Besides buying a new one lo l ..) Thanks

You can get your mind off of it by using one of those plastic lids/covers. No scratches on mine.

At least you didn't get a DV1000. You can sneeze on it and it scratches. So don't feel too bad about it.

Thanks...I'd prefer not using a lid. Today I went out and got myself a nice targus back pack...very nice!

But you have no way of physically/chemically getting rid of it?

    Thanks

I was thinking...I have this stuff that works on the car, its like a cream of some sort, and it removes fine scratches from the car. THe scratches in my laptop are not dents or anything, they're like scuffs. Would the same thing I use on the car be harmful to the lid of the 700m?

hmmm, can you post a pic? like closeup of the scratch(es)?

    that might help.

you may have some options but scratches on plastic might be tough to get out...

post a pic and lets take a look

it's a little hard to tell, but those look like scuffs to me. do any of them go down into the plastic? is it possible to tell if the black stuff is on top of the plastic?

if it's on top, you should be able to buff it out. maybe with some sort of plastic cleaner? i just did a guick google for plastic cleaner and came up with a lot of hits.

if it goes down into the plastic, you may try that nu finish stuff for cars that fills in scratches on paint, but i don't know how safe that would be for plastic.

finally, there is a clay compound that is used to buff out scratchs on cars that you can pick up at any auto parts store, you can try that, but again, i don't know if it's safe for plastic.

since many cars have painted plastic bumpers now, you should be safe, but again, be careful.

if you DO get it fixed, you should post how since i'm sure others would really benefit from your experience

sorry, didn't see your other post up there describing the scratches.

yeah, if they're just scuffs, you should be home free. a plastic cleaner should get the job done for you.

    post result pics please !

    Thannks DrumFu,

There is no "black stuff" that I can simply buff away. In fact, it's not black, the way I took it with the camera in teh light and all makes it look black, butits not , i t looks silverish, only it looks darker when looking at it from the right angle. There is no indentation in the laptop, no crevice or anything that needs to be filled. It is a scratch.

I have some auto stuff that was used a long time ago to take away fineline scratches on cars that worked, but iono if its safe or not. I really , really do not have the courage to be the experimentor for the website! My rhinoskin hard case scratched my x50v and made the paint come off, but someone on aximsite recommended that its just the neoprine liner coming off adn that I should try getting it off with a sharp object...only made things worse! !!!!!!!! I'm very worried about messing it up. Do you know any 100% safe alternatives? Thanks

Sorry forgot to add again. How would a plastic 'cleaner' do the trick? It;s not dirt or anything lol, beleive me, I've tried rubbing it out and it ain't coming off. Do you think brasso would work? Don't they use those on ipods?

you might want to go to an arts 'n' crafts store or an art supply store...

they may be able provide some help.

other than that, i think the auto stuff might work. not sure if you can find a spot to test on that won't show up on the laptop?

yeah, if there's something that works for ipods (i dunno of anything), i'm sure it would work for your machine

Those are nice pictures. I just ordered a few 8x10s and 4x6s. LOL!

Looks like it is 'cleanable' to me. Brasso is a No No. Just put a college bumper sticker or Yu Gi O stickers on it.

I would try the cleaner on the underside in a little spot and see if it does anything to the plastic, but it may be different b/c of the finish on the top.
