I'm looking to buy a nice LCD for my laptop to hook up to when I am using it at home. I mostly want generous amount of screen real estate so I prefer a res comparable or higher than what I have on my notebook (1400x1050) but have had trouble finding LCDs to choose from.

    I found two at newegg

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824255001
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009094

The westinghouse looks tempting but its a little over my price range, but there are sooo many port options which is great. The acer looks like it would fit my needs doesn't really have any frills but I am wonder about the screen quality.

Can anyone recommend a good external for me with $300 as the price limit?

I looked at that LCD as well, it does look very nice, I was just concerned about the resolution its the same as my SXGA+ just wide screen.

General question but if you have a bigger screen with the same resolution will there be more screen real estate. For example my 1400x1050 is 14.1" if I were to get a 1400x1050 on a say 20.1" would I be able to fit more on the screen?

1400x1050? That's certainly an odd resolution. Usually 20.1" has a 1680x1050, I would recommend a Dell 2007FPW, or the 2407FPW HC, the two greatest monitors ever made

It's prefect 4:3. I've had a 20" Dell for a while running at 1600x1200. Works great with R60 while docked. There was a 24" LCD for $300 on FatWallet last week I think.

I wouldn't recommend Acer - was never impressed with Acer I saw in stores. I haven't see Westinghouse myself, so I cannot comment about them. Personally, I recommend NEC most - the best LCD maker that won't empty your wallet (EIZO will, hehe), IMO. But of course, it also depends on each models...

R U going to use it as primary or dual display? item change sizes if u drag them between different resolution displays. web research using word & excell can get frustrating moving/ editing/viewing 5+ open documents when docs & fonts are either too large on one or too small on the other. I match my Sony 17" 1920x1200 notebook with a 20" ViewSonic 1600x1200 which was a royal pain until the ViewSonic went on strike after a year or so. Going for a what I thought would be a perfect match, Sam's has Samsung 245bw (1920x1200) for $450. Anticipating desk wide size working display surface with everything the same size turned out to be neighbors greener pastures. My Sony display went blank (must of missed it's Viewsonic friend) after installing the Samsung. Tried everything wasting days & weeks. Sony support equates to bathing suit type support if you know what I mean. Samsung couldn't care less. AMD-ATI website states their is a known problem connecting digital cables blanking out notebook dispays and a solution does not exist. I used analog. So much for a gaming 256 MB ATI 600x graphics card.

Suggest checking your graphics card compatibility before installing anything. & do a dry run using a store display unit to be sure before buying anything besides Samsung & Viewsonic. I'd trade real support for lesser quality picture after dealing with Sam & Son who think their product don't smell & couldn't care less after they have your money.
    good luck, rafdo

I don't plan on using it as an extended screen. Eventually I want to have a desktop set up through a dock. The plan is to get a dock, an external screen, wireless mouse and keyboard to give me a pretty nice set up at home. I take my computer with my often and its a pain to unplug and replug everything every time I take it with me so being able to dock it would be pretty convenient. I also work in excel a lot so having a great amount of screen space to work with is my goal. Plus when i am at home I have many windows open the bigger screen would be convenient.

Now I just have to save up all that money!

No, because 1400=1400, no matter what size it is.

I am facing the same problem with my Dell E1705 and Samsung. Did you finally fix your problem? I unistalled the samsung driver, loaded new graphic card driver, boot in save mode, nothing work. I can only have a external dvi connection, VGA did not work. Laptop lcd blacken.

I paid Dell $200 to look at it(out-of-warranty). They told me to take out the hard disk and send the laptop to them. But after reading your post, if the driver did get overwriten in xp, then I should send the harddisk for them to diagnostic?

    Can you help me?

i OWN THAT acer and love it i actually bought mine at office depot when they had a special on them for 179.95.. honestly its a great monitor, has great color mine has no dead pixels, the one drawback is it doesnt swivel but if you are looking at ones priced like this most will not swivel anyway. imo get the acer save the money i doubt you will be disappointed in it.
