For gaming, movies, and music, without going pro, Z-5500 are probably the best choice. You can buy them for cheaper than $300. They are so powerful, i cant turn them up more than half way. I game a lot and listen to trance, the speakers deliver powerfully punchy zero-distortion bass that rattles the entire house. Apart from its ability to communicate with polar bears, its very reliable, has amazing connectivity, supports DTS 96-24, is THX certified, supports dolby pro-logic 2, and has a coaxial and an optical connections. Its a true 5.1 system that many people buy for their HTS. Read some reviews on line and you will see, most people are satisfied.

z5500 is great for everything except music... the bass is too heavy... and missing a range of mids.... if you are a music lover... buy a decent amp and a set of bookshelf speakers

I guess this depends on what music you listen to and how much of an audiophile you are. :)

Can your notebook handle 5.1? If you are just set on either the Bose or the Logitech Id take the Logitech. The Bose is overpriced.

However if you want more options you can go with bookshelf option as suggested or Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 (or Ifi) if you want a balance of music and games. For purely music Swan M10s are hard to beat.

I dont know what a servo-driven subwoofer is, leaftye, but the system far exceeded my expectations in all aspects. The biggest one being sound quality. Music imported via 360kbps mpeg audio at 44.1khz sounds very clear, and the bass is vibrant and crisp. Unless, of course, you crank the bass setting up and mess up the equalizer presets.

The z-5500 have too much bass as is; you'll be fine with the stock sub. There are better systems, but they're out of your range (and mine). I'm probably going to save up and get a good receiver and some polk speakers. The problem with Logitech's line is that they aren't as well built as companies that focus on audio. Another problem is their lack of a regular receiver.

boom boom bass would be the z5500's. You just wont get the crisp highs of really good tweeters. They sound pretty good though!

yeah, z-5500 would be the best is you want to invest 300$. Since you're in Ontario, you should look at TigerDirect or NCIX. They cost 299$ at TG and 335$ at NCIX, but TG's shipping fees are always higher..

They's also the Altec Lansing FX5051. They may be better to listen music, but I never listened to them so, maybe you should try to find some reviews about these speakers thought..

Look, the Z-5500 thing is way much better than others for the same price. Mine is already 2 years old and still rocks.

I listen to my collection of Porcupine Tree DTS DVDs on it and it sounds just great.

Could you report back in a few months on it? I've heard reports of the z-5500 dying shortly after the two year mark. Coincidentally, that's also when the warranty expires...

2.0 is 2 speakers with no subwoofer

2.1 would be 2 speakers with a subwoofer

    5.1 is 5 speakers with a subwoofer :)
