I recommend the Xbox 360 controller for Windows.

The most readily available, widely compatible, and easy to use is the xbox 360 controller. Both the wired and wireless versions work, though you need the pc wireless adapter for the wireless one.

Both the Playstation 3 and Wii controllers can work also but are not designed to out of the box so it requires some programs and computer knowledge to get those working.

XBox 360 wired controller. I got mine less than a week ago and it is terrific.

I have a logitech dualaction 2 and a logitech rumblepad 2. Both very nice and comfortable gamepads. The rumblepad 2 will run you about $50 but the vibration support for games is extremely limited so you're better off with the dualaction 2 (same thing just no vibration).

The Xbox 360 controller is your best bet for plug-n-play, the logitech gamepads generally require you to do a custom button to keyboard mapping in the logitech gamepad software.

Get the 360 controller for the XBOX

Then go to microsoft's site and download the windows drivers for the controller.
This is the only thing on the CD that comes with the 360 controller for windows, so by getting the xbox one you can save some money, and just download the driver

If you keep track of woot.com they sometimes sell Saitek gamepads. I got my P2600 Rumbleforce for 9 dollars including shipping and it works nearly perfectly.
