Hey everyone. I want to rig up my own notebook cooler using a piece of aluminum, a couple fans, a switch, and connect it to the laptop via USB for power.

My question is do they make some kind of adapter so I can hook up regular old computer fans to a USB adapter

One of the problems is voltage. You can get wiring diagrams online...and build yuor own.

Well bytecc for example, has a very simple design for a cooler. They just use 5V fans with a 3-wire connector, and somehow use an adapter to change USB into one of those connectors.

Anyone know where I can buy one?

my mate has an easy ide thing that basically you can use to plug a standard internal hard drive into usb. As well as a ide lead it also has the lead to power the hard drive up. He got it for less than a fiver and it can be connected to standard internal fans. Something like this could be used to power your fans at the correct voltage

So USB output ~5 Amps. You are going to need capacitors and such to get the right power to your fans. I would be careful when you make it, and make sure all the connections are right.
