I want/need a back up for my laptop so it has to be able to run for many hours strait burning about twice a week or so.
    I have a 320GB HD

    Options that I see:
    WD passport 320GB
WD my book 500 or 750GB (but it uses external power) can this have a partition?
Make my own so I could use ethernet or have firewire (would really like one or the other for the speed)

I have no eSATA port but I have a express card slot could I use this?

As you can see I like WD

I am looking for the cheapest option and will/has to be ordered from newegg

well if you want the best space for price you should get an internal hard drive and put it into an enclosure. I did that and it saved me a few bucks.

but you look like you need a portable drive so i would recommend the passport. it does it's job.

I have no idea what you are talking about with the express card slot, if there are eSATA adapters that go in there then by all means, do that.

do u need to transport the data u want to put in it?

the WD passport mobile HDD comes with single (1) usb plug. not double (2) usb plug (like Y shape). some computer does not supply enough power to HDD using only single plug. so bear that in mind. WD does sell the double usb plug as an option. seagate freeagent go has one that is bundled with the twin usb plug.

saying that. i think for your need i would recommend the desktop one. as mobile HDD is not really design for running for hours on end. it do get quite hot. also, because this is for backup, transporting it around and about is not quite a good idea in the first place anyway. if you're tranporting the drive around it will be subjected to more wear and tear. and acident do happen.

well if you consider the fact that my book line-up is based on wd hard drives (i believe the newest 3.5" as well) it all comes down to whether you like the my book cases or would prefer to have bulkier not-that-good-looking but more user friendly when "transplanting" external case... beacuase you see, my books come with wd drives only and have a bit harder to upgrade form (forget about guarantee if you disassemble one for an upgrade in some stores). so yeah, it's all up to you and you yourself.

btw, i really like the wd drives, as i have a passport 80GB and my cousin has the my book essential 160GB for more than a year now. and we have no complaints what-so-ever and really like the size and looks. but again we do have high quality mobos with great power input through usb ports so the passport works flawlessly. and the essential does it's work as well being a place to put all the databases' files once a day or even less often just to burn them all in a series once in a month... plus due to my cousin's husband's sister having the wind we do rip our cds/dvds to iso files for her and put them on the my book/my passport...

and we also heard a lot about the problems with the my book series of products and simply hope that our gear is and will forever be flaw-free :D
