Not a bad deal. You may want to consider creating your own. That way you can pick the drive and case that best fits your budget and needs. I would suggest a eSata/USB drive for any PC users. The Western Digital drives are also fairly dependable in comparison to other models, but of course, hard drives failure is common. At that price, I have seen packages with Western Digital GP 1TB drives, one of the best drives out there at the moment. The set was about the same price, cheaper than the drive alone ;)

All you need is a compatible (3.5” / SATA) enclosure and a normal desktop (3.5”) hard disk. You can find those from any place selling computer hardware.

However, that WD Mybook 500GB is a pretty good deal at $89, I don’t think you can build your own for much cheaper than that. But as gengerald said, currently 1TB drives will give you best value for money. You can buy an external 1TB drive (disk + enclosure) for around $110.

If you really want to future proof your external hdd's use, then I would look at 1TB drive. The Western Digital Caviar Green and Black are two of the best out. The Black is one of the highest performing drives, while the Green is a hybrid drive, reducing the heat while scoring high in its bracket as well as being a bit cheaper. A good case may run you $30. Off Newegg, the Black 1TB and Rosewill eSata Case w/ 80MM fan will run like a grand total of $180 - but remeber these are two of the best components out. If you can use cashback for ebay, once it bumps back up to a higher percentage you can save money on the drive by purchasing it from ZipZoomFly's eBay storefront. The Fantom 1TB has the Green version inside and is cheaper than the just buying the drive when the Fantom external drive goes on sale, which has been quite often. If I was you, I would either go with a Fantom or build your own with a Green + case. Spend the extra $20 for that one TB drive, you won't regret it in the future.

Edit: PhoenixFx, that is an awesome deal. That is more than likely the Green, but hey, for the price you can't beat it. If it had eSata, I would jump :)
