I'm looking for a good set of speakers less than $60 for my dorm room. I keep hearing about logitech's z-2300s and x-230s. Are there any other brands and speakers you might recommend? I plan on playing music with them as well as possibly hooking them up to my TV for movies.

    Thanks,

    Dan

If you can stretch to around $90, get yourself the Logitech Z-2300's.

Great speakers. I've listened to numerous other speakers, both at electronic stores and at friends homes, and the Z-2300's, for the price range, have no peer.

If you can swing it, you won't be sorry!

If you look around, you may be able to find a pair of Klipsch Promedia Ultra 2.0 speakers... awesome stuff.

i'd have to put my 2 cents in for the logitech z200s, again. Now it's been confirmed that the entire floor can hear them all the way down the hall, it's louder than the fire alarm, and the RA will ask you to close both your room and your suite doors :D i don't think that an 8 inch 120watt sub can be beat for the price. Make sure to shop around though, try pricegrabber or gottadeal.com will have a special posted, usually it's buy.com that does a sale every once in a whle.

you can use your speakers for tv w/ a cable from radio shack....its a head phone jack that has a L/R cable on the other end, the red and white cables that plug into tv's for sound

Im on the fourth floor in my dorm. With the windows open, people were dancing outside my dorm to the music I was playing through my Z-2300's. Yeah ive had complaints, and yeah all 4 floors of my dorm complex can hear it when I have my door open. They are very very nice speakers, and I love the sub. They are definitly louder then the fire alarm, and the sound quality is still great at that loudness. I highly recommend them, especially for $90, they are a great buy.

Get the x-230's if you are set on a price under $60 they are very loud and have great bass. As said earlier get the Z-2300's. Altec lansing does make some nice speakers but when it comes to pure power you can't go wrong with logitech. and no I am not a logitech fan boy, I actually prefer my friend's pioneer system(1200watts, 5.1 surround) but you need a large room for these, actually its best to go out side because you'll go deaf if you stay in the room with it turned up full blast. I also have to recomend Klispch Pro Media. They sound great and have pro performance.

you just can't beat pure power but for a dorm room I'd watch how many watts you get 60-80watts is good if you don't want your neighbors/RA knocking on your door. Even then, my logitect x-230's got the attention of the RA from the floor below me and they are a 32wcontinous/64wpeak 2.1system.

Yeah mine are 200/400, so needless to say I get plenty of attention in my dorm :) Not saying its bad, I actually like it when people come and tell me to turn it down. Im not going to like I like pissing people off sometimes, and I have a real easy way to do it here.

I own a pair of Z-2300's as well, and I have to say that they have no peer in the price range. Altec Lansings or Creatives that can even compete with this power and clarity run at least $150, while the Z-2300's can often be found for $100. I have honestly never turned up my speakers past about 30% or I would probably have the police at my door.

    Highly recommended.

Living on the 4th floor, I find it an accomplishment to get someone who lives on the 1st to walk up here and tell me to turn it down, not kidding. And Ive never really put it over 50% volume. I dont know why but I get pleasure out of making people mad sometimes. These speakers let me do that very easily.

At college, people sleep at irregular times and would really appreciate a quiet environment after pulling several all-nighters in a row.

I remember some frat in my hall kept pulling the firealarm for 5 times in a month. The entire dorm was well pissed.

Its not like I do it all the time, usually people just come by expecting to see a 5.1 home theatre system, but they dont. They're usually not pissed, but impressed, which is good too. But this isnt really a thread about college life, but speakers for a dorm. I live in a dorm and I have these babies and I love them to death.

I own a Logitehch X-230 system and am quite pleased with it! I bought it brand new for $20 from a guy that had a couple systems in damaged boxes.
The system doesn't take a lot of room (with the exception of the bulky sub, but you'll find that in virtually all 2.1/5.1 system) and it's nice that the speakers can be turned 90 degrees around their base so that they can be mounted on the wall or on any vertical surface easily (and looks pretty cool).
As for sound quality, i don't think these speakers will satisfy classical-music enthusiasts but I still enjoy classical guitar music on these speakers. It also lacks the stylish Sound Control piece which is found in height-priced systems such as the z-2300 (love that system) but your budget will probably lead you to a 2.1 system rather than a 5.1

This system is also surprisingly powerful, which is a big plus in a college environment. The bottom line is that this is a great system that will satisfy all of your gaming/movie-watching/music-listening needs and will do it for a great price.
Where to buy? I did a search in New Egg and found one for $30(!)

I'm guessing that you only want a 2.1 speaker set because I've seen the Logitech X-530 speaker set go for $55 on newegg

A guy down the hall from me has those, they suck. Thats why its a 5.1 for $55. My 2.1 has alot more power and it sounds alot better. More speakers dosent always mean better, and that sub has alot less power then the 2300's

I agree, the X-230's out perform the X-530's, and it's true that more speakers is not always more performance.
