Hey folks, here's the news.
So, I have this wonderful little Seagate 250Gb external, and recently the thing corrupted itself, so I quick formatted it (lost all the data, but so it goes). When I plugged it back in, it worked well for about three seconds, then it just didn't show up in Explorer anymore. After finally reconnecting it (took about twenty tries), and various different power sockets, it wants me to format the bloody thing again.
So what's the deal? Is the hard drive dead? Did the quick format not correct the corrupted file system? Is it a power source problem? Do I need a divine miracle?
Cheers,

not that i can tell what the cause of the problem is, but i'd just ship it back and get a new one.

Contact customer support, maybe this problem is quite prevalent

Likely the hard drive died in some way. See if you can get it replaced.

Seagate will probably have you run their tools on the drive and then issue an RMA.

Figured it out. Turns out Freeagents are prone to overheating, so the little bugger ran to hot and just went and corrupted itself. Brilliant idea putting a tiny little cooling system on the bottom of the hard drive. I think I'll keep it for emergency stuff, and then just get a Maxtor one touch 1Tb for everyday backup and storage use.
EDIT: I'm actually sitting here now, typing one-handed, holding a glass of freezing water to the cooling vents while the drive lies sideways on my desk. An awkward picture but it works. -

That's bloody hilarious. Might I suggest returning your obviously defective product?
