I've been looking around sites for a laptop backpack that would fit a 14.1" Inspiron 1420, but most of the good deals are meant for 15.4" laptops. My question is, would the extra space created by putting a 14" laptop into a 15" backpack affect the protection and safety the compartment provides?

No, you should be fine. Aside from the bags Dell provides on their site, a lot of other companies, such as Ogio, base their "15.4 inch notebook" on the macbook pro, which is sleeker than the 1420 in design so not to worry.

I concur. Using a 15.4 inch backpack will not affect the safety of a 14 inch notebook.
