right now I have a pretty old $10 random mouse, and I want to get something new.

Are there any cheap gaming mouses available for around $50? Not looking for anything flashy, just something I can use to play FPS without any problems.

Logitech G500. $38 from NewEgg, with rebate (ends 11/22/10).

Some people like Razer products. I don't. They make decent products. If I'm on a budget, I want every penny I spend to buy features that make a mouse a better mouse... not Razer's "g4M3rZ" features like gold-plated USB connectors or colored LED's that don't do jack for mouse performance. Get Logitech all the way.

I'll let the reviews speak for themselves. You should notice a very distinct pattern with review scores for the Logitech mice.

Logitech G500 (Normally $58, $38 after rebate from NewEgg)
NewEgg: 5/5 stars from 483 reviews
Amazon: 4.5/5 stars from 142 reviews

    Logitech MX518 ($45)
NewEgg: 5/5 stars from 3,207 reviews
Amazon: 4.5/5 stars from 423 reviews

    Logitech G9X ($62)
NewEgg: 5/5 stars from 146 reviews
Amazon: 4.5/5 stars from 65 reviews

    Logtech G700 ($85)
NewEgg: 5/5 stars from 58 reviews
Amazon: 4.5/5 stars from 25 reviews

    Razer Deathadder ($45)
NewEgg: 4/5 stars from 413 reviews
Amazon: 4.5/5 stars from 106 reviews

    Razer Lachesis ($45)
NewEgg: 4/5 stars from 50 reviews
Amazon: 3.5/5 stars from 97 reviews

    Razer Imperator ($80)
NewEgg: 4/5 stars from 53 reviews
Amazon: 4/5 stars from 24 reviews

    Razer Mamba ($130)
NewEgg: 4/5 stars from 217 reviews
Amazon: 3.5/5 stars from 88 reviews

My vote goes to the Razer DeathAdder. Sure, the blue lighting and gold-plated connector don't really do anything for the mouse's functionality, but they certainly don't detract from it either. The fact is, it's a top-notch gaming mouse, and is widely regarded as having one of the most comfortable form factors ever; since the mouse was introduced in 2007 it's remained one of the most popular gaming mice on the market, in both of its versions, plus the wireless Mamba, which shares its shape. It's got a 3,500 DPI optical sensor, which I've always found to be smoother and more tolerant of different surfaces than lasers, and it has one of the fastest perfect control speeds of any mouse out there.

Not that there's anything wrong with the G500, mind you; it's an excellent mouse, and certainly at an excellent price. Spec-wise, it is indeed superior to the DeathAdder in terms of DPI (although I would argue that 3,500 is more than anyone realistically needs) and on par in terms of response time. I've owned several Logitech mice in the past, including a G9, G5 and MX518, and there is definitely nothing wrong with any of them. I just personally find the Razer mice I've used to be more comfortable for me.

tl;dr - neither Razer nor Logitech (nor any other major gaming peripheral brand) is inherently any better than the other; in terms of specs that matter, they are equally competitive. It basically comes down to what you find to be the most comfortable.

Go to Best Buy if there's one in your area; they tend to have a few gaming mice on display for customers to get a feel for, from both Razer and Logitech. Go try a few out and see what you like.

I second the recommendation to check mice out in person.

If it were me, and I'd be using it for gaming, I'd buy (another) Razer Deathadder. I've owned many, many mice, and have used dozens more that my friends own. I like the logitech mice just fine, they make a great product, but for me, the Razer's have a comfort level that just "fits" for me.

Of the 5 or so Razer products I've owned over the years, the Deathadder is by and far the best.

An important thing to note, is how do you control your mouse? Do you use your palm, your fingertips, or something in between that? Knowing that will be half the battle when it comes to shopping for a good mouse you'll enjoy.

Sure it does. You spend more money on "features" that offer nothing in the way of increasing the performance of the product itself. The OP is looking for a cheap gaming mouse, not a mouse that looks cheap with a bunch LEDs strewn across it.

In any case, I would get a Logitech MX518. Terrific mouse, one of the perennial favorites among gamers everywhere. It's highly affordable, very comfortable, offers a great feature set, and will last you for years. Prior to my G9, the MX518 was my favorite gaming mouse to use.

The R.A.T. 5 looks good to me. It has most of the features of the R.A.T. 7, it just lacks the extra palm grips and pinky grips, and has a lower DPI laser (4000 I believe). I saw it at Fry's for $50 the other day.

I bought a G500 and MX518 from Newegg the other day. I got them yesterday and I have been using them non-stop. I have to say, the G500 is a tiny bit better than the MX518, though not by much. They both have pluses and minuses. The price was only $10 different. And I'm not biased since I didn't have an old and new mouse, but two new mice.

    outta curiosity.

the logitech M500 is just a G500 without those extra buttons (and maybe less dpi or something) right?

'cause I bought one of those to replace my G5 that keeps shorting out.

It is just a cheap wired laser mouse made by Logitech. Not much in common on the inside or with drivers. It does use the same scroll wheel though.

    ah, gotcha.

speaking of that scroll wheel that's gonna take a bit to get used to. It's loose. Oh well. I just needed a mouse that doesn't have a weird...thing over the usb cord like the g5 that eventually caused the g5's cord to short out after being wrapped up like fifty thousand times.

Yeah, the looseness of the scroll wheel is probably my least favorite part about the G500. I think the dual action is kind of neat, not necessarily super useful, but the side to side scroll wheel buttons are a little too much. I would prefer a more solid scroll wheel.

Dell also has sales on the Alienware TactX mouse. I think it regularly goes on sale for $30~ in the states, it goes on sale for $40~ here, I picked one up recently, pretty decent, as its a rebranded Logitech mouse.

Alienware TactX is a re-branded Logitech G9x. The Logitech G9x is a great mouse in its own right. The Alienware variant adds AlienFX colored LED lighting.

+1 on Razer Deathadder. Unless your hands are small, it would be the perfect mouse.

even with the LEDs and pulsing lights that clearly dont enhance your gaming Razer makes awesome mice, the deathadder is a good reliable, reasonably priced mouse. buy it.
