Sennheiser HD 280 Pro. beyerdynamic DT 231. Both are available for under $100. I own the HD 280's and absoultely love them. Fantastic isolation (hold sound in, keep sound out) and low frequency response. They are a tad on the larger side, only real drawback. They fold up nicely considering their size.

I use Sony MDR-V900 headphones for 3 years now and absolutely love them. They are very comfortable, produce very good quality sound and have EXCELLENT sound isolation. You can definitely find them for under $150 even though MSRP is $250. The other thing is that these have 24ohm impedance instead of 32ohms - this makes them louder (which is a big plus for portable devices). Some sennheiser's have 150ohm impedance which makes a portable amplifier a must, with these it's just the opposite. They also have 3 watt max power handling capacity which means that they will NEVER distort and 1 watt output which means that you will go deaf before reaching max volume.

Response range is 5Hz to 30kHz.

Here's a link to one of the websites off google: >>>

Though these are just something you might want to consider :)

by the way the do fold into a relatively compact size and come with a leather carrying pouch.

One thing to note with all cup style head phones is the fact that they put pressure on your ears allowing you to only wear them for a short period of time. I'm yet to find a pair that you can wear for long periods of time.

In full agreement here. I would advise against getting a pair of superaural headphones - pressure, and it's even worse if you get a noise-canceling pair. It's all personal preference . . make sure you read reviews.

The Sennheiser HD280's are unbeatable for the money.

just wanted to add that the headphones I mentioned are actually over-the-ear headphones, but that makes them a lot more comfortable and they can be worn for hours on end.

I would also recommend checking out Headroom - http://www.headphone.com/
They have a lot of good reviews and buying guides for headphones of all sizes and price range. They've been helpful in my decision-making.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I am still in the hunt, but I appreciate your advice, and am still weighing all options. Also, I have used the earbuds with my ipod before, but I can't stand to wear them for long periods of time because they irratate my ear, as do most ear buds I have ever tried. I am leaning towards the circum-aural headphones because I think they will give better quality sound, and be more comfortable for me. Have any of you ever battled with such questions? Any advice? Thank you so much

When I look for headphones, I tend to look for the ones that put more pressure around the ears. I've never gotten uncomfortable during long periods of wearing them. It usually feels better, in my opinion.

The best headphones I've used are either the Bose TriPort or the Maxell NC-II. The Maxell are cheap (under $30), but they are awesome. Of course, you'd probably be better off taking the route that you are currently considering.

I will second OpenFace's opinion on Maxell NC-II. Great headphones esp for the price range!

I picked some Koss UR-19's at Best Buy about a year back. If you don't mind the size, I really like them because they fold up pretty small. Keep most noises out, let enough in so that I know what's going on around me, and they sound very nice.
These guys. They've gotten good reviews, too.
