A few of the notebooks I'm looking at do not come with internal bluetooth. As a compromise, I'm considering just buying a bluetooth adapter. I have an adapter from Belkin, but I'm considering purchasing a different one because the Belkin adapter flashes a consistent blue light that I find incredibly distracting.

Can anyone recommend a small, quality adapter without such a flash?

I am asuming that you are talking about an external adaptor. That's what I use
Amazon.com: IOGear USB 2.1 Bluetooth Micro Adapter GBU421:…
it's tiny and it doesn't flash.

Also, the adapter from deal extreme is plug and play, so no drivers needed. You can also open the case easily and tape up the led so you won't see any blue led light. The actual pcb of this thing is about the size of your thumb nail both width, length and thickness.

Just out of curiosity, how hard would it be to install an internal bluetooth card on a typical notebook?

Yeah, this might be an even cheaper solution.

Very easy if the laptop has a spare usb connection.

Thanks. So I would have to give up a USB port?

The two solutions I can think of are:
    1. A 2-in-1 bluetooth and wifi mini PCI-e card.
    2. An expresscard bluetooth adapter if your notebook has that port.

I have a question, though. What kind of modern notebook doesn't come with integrated BT?

The Best Buy exclusive version of the Toshiba Portege R700 line. I can wait and customize one from Toshiba, but the BB price will likely be a lot cheaper.

Usually, there are 4-5 spare usb connections on laptops. If you can find those connections on the motherboard, you don't need to lose a usb port.

Also, if a similar model of laptop has bluetooth in it, i'll be very easy to add a bluetooth adapter inside the laptop.
