Alright, so I've done a bit of reading at this forum and others and I'm still really confused as to one really simple question.

I plan on moving around a lot with my notebook, and I thought BT mice did not require a base. I thought the mouse could contact the laptop directly (since my notebook has built in bluetooth), and that would eliminate the need for any type of USB receiver.

I know that most of the mice come with a base to charge it with, and at night I don't mind plugging it in to the PC and charging the mouse. However, it's not like I want to take the base/dock with me, or anything.

So, is it possible for me to just take the mouse along with me, and use that to contact the PC? Or is the base a requirement at all time with the notebook? I'm curious, a mice without a base seems so appealing for a notebook user [ :)]

You're not alone in your confusion, this is a thorny topic, I'll do my best to clarify. Some Bluetooth mice require a base for charging, some run on batteries and don't need a base. Almost all mice wil come with a Bluetooth adaptor, assuming your machine doesn't have it built in. This is often built into the base if one is required for charging.

So in general, if you get a battery powered mouse you should be able to pair it with your machine, without the base or included adaptor. This isn't always the case though, as special fuctions may require the Bluetooth stack that comes with the mouse/adapter. If you get a small travel mouse though, liek hte one from Targus, odds are you'll be fine.

    Does this help?

I don't know.. I was planning on buying that famous BT model from Logitech (I can't remember the model number, the one everyone has) and hoping that it can connect directly to my laptop. I'm assuming it can do this, providing my laptop has blutetooth compatibility?

Most likely, but you have to plug in teh base as well to charge it.

I WAS CONFUSED ABOUT THIS AS WELL!! I went ahead and bought the BT mouse made by Targus that they sell at BestBuy. I figured, if it needed the included dongle to work, I would simply return it under their 30 day moneyback/no-questions gaurantee.

My notebook works perfectly with the new mouse, and I am thrilled with it! It does not have a base station to charge it, and runs off of two AAA batteries... I've found I get around 20 - 25 hours of runtime off of each set of batteries. I went out and bought 4 rechargables and a travel recharger for another $20, and there we go, problem solved.

Anyway, the Targus mouse is great. It's small, and easy to travel, but large and shapely enough to be as comfortable as your normal desktop mouse.

I am interested in this topic also. I have been looking at the Microsoft model. Any feedback...? This will be my first bt mouse the Asus W3V has bt built in so it seems a natural way to go with the mouse. Any suggestions?

OK, let me try to help here. Some mice come with docks to charge (ex Logitech x900) whitch include a bluetooth reciever. Other mice like the Mirosoft one include the reciever only if you need it. I have an I6kD with bluetooth and am using it directly with the mouse (no software installed, no MS dongle). The logitech only needs the base to charge if you have a bluetooth dongle built in.

I just got the Microsoft BT mouse tonight and so far I have had no problems with it at all. I like the fact that I can use regular AA batteries with it. I did not need to use the "dongle" that came with it. Every thing was seen with the built in BT on my W3V [8D]

Does anyone know if apple wireless kb/m will work with the asus w3v's BT adapter? I know they work with some but can't find if they work on all adapters.
