In your opinion with price to performance added to the value of the unit, what is the best iPod docking unit?

Even though the Bose Dock 10 is $599, it has by far the best sound ever for such a device, and even rivals some of the $1000 plus speaker setups, IMO!

With that being said...I like to go portable, which the Dock 10 isn't. :(

Bose portable dock station is $399, that makes it super expensive in my book. I would like something in the $150 to $200 price range with superb sound and battery life.

So what do you guys have and what do you recommend?

You can save money and increase your options but not getting a "specialized" product that is a dock made just for an ipod.

Instead you can choose any external self powered speakers and just plug them into the headphone out port.

A good pair of headphones/earbuds will get you the best quality for your money but I think since you want the dock that your wanting speakers.

BTW most agree Bose is not bad quality but bad price. General rule of thumb you can get equal quality from another high end audio brand for 1/2 the price of the Bose set.

I have to agree with everything Vicious said.

Especially the parts about Bose being overpriced for the quality you get, and the part about not buying iPod-specific docks. I have owned two iPod-specific sound docks in the past, and the problem is that they don't always work well between different generations of iPod products. For example, almost all iPod docks made before the iPhone 3G don't charge the iPhone 3G, because the pin-outs that deliver power to the device have been changed in that generation of product. Go with a standard speaker set, that uses a standard 3.5mm stereo headphone jack instead. It will be compatible with any iPod device today, in the future, or from any other manufacturer.

the Bose speakers are good, but the sound is not very warm and full bodied as some of those docks that use high quality valve docks and coupled with high quality bookshelf reference speakers.... basically you get what you paid for.

I'm very interested in knowing which dock(s) you are referring to?

I do agree you will get better bang for buck with headphones, maybe even earbuds. I ride my bike most of the time, and would love to have a great pair of earbuds at an outstanding price!

I'm not trying to be funny lead_org, but if you know of a better dock that is also cheaper, please post here or let me know in a PM. :)
