After owning the Microsoft Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse 3000 for some time, I have developed the claw grip style. I am a casual gamer looking for a new mouse to buy. Have any suggestions? I have already looked into Logitech's G9 series but the $90 price tag is a bit of a turn off. Any claw grip gamers out there willing to share their experience with mice?

I was in the EXACT position as you a few weeks ago.
I did some research and people said G9 is designed for claw grip style, so I bought one online for about 53 bucks. I didn't like it at first but I thought I might get used to it, I didn't. The G9's scroll wheel is really hard to click and it's wider than most mice (even with the slim grip). The DPI feature is really good but for a casual gamer like you and I don't need it that high. I play COD4 a lot and I have to use the middle mouse button to throw grenades, I must admit, G9's middle mouse button is way too hard to click.
So I returned the G9 and got the good old MX518, it has a much lower DPI (1800 vs 3200 on G9). The middle mouse button is much easier to click, you wont click it by accident when you use the scroll wheel and you won't scroll the wheel by accident when you click, it's nearly perfect. The grip is also very comfortable (I've used a small laptop mouse for a long time as well and developed a claw grip style). I love the MX518, and if you throw in a decent gaming mouse pad, the speed should be more than enough for a casual gamer. It's also priced at around $30 on ebay and amazon, much cheaper than G9.
I would recommend the MX518 to you.
edit: I've also looked at the G5, the max DPI on it is only 200 higher than MX518. people complained that the middle mouse wheel on it is also hard to click, so I didn't bother to try it and went for the MX518.

The G9 with the Precision grip is great for claw-style handling. The wheel on the G9 is adjustable, and if you have it set to notched mode instead of hyperscrolling, it's easy to click. Which brings me to the next point, hyperscrolling itself is awesomely useful.

The higher DPI is excellent if you know how to adjust for it.

what types of games do you want to play? RTS or FPS or everything? For RTS games like Starcraft and Warcraft III and whatnot where speed is important, a lighter and smaller mouse like a Razer Salmosa or the Logitech Mini Optical (which seem to be rare to find these days) are great.

I tried it both ways, I didn't feel a difference between the two, both were hard to click.

It softens over time... I've had my VX revolution (that has the HyperScroll) since November. It's gotten noticeably easier to use the middle click over time. An alternative would be to open up the mouse, and loosen the screw on the spring that keeps the scroll wheel up.

Hmm. Then either mine is especially awesome or yours is a lemon.

I asked Alex what mouse works best for his claw grip and he said none of them really fit right, he prefers human heads.

As many here have said, the G9 is an obvious choice with its ability to use the customized grips it offers. You might want to check out Logitech's website as they offer an additional grip for G9 and G9x mice. I bought it and love the way it fits my hand.

You know, I forgot I could buy things on ebay and craiglsit.. haha.. >.< I just looked it up and found one for $50. Maybe I'll give it a try. If I like it, I'll keep it. :)

I've had a little experience with Razer. I used a Microsoft Habu and it was pretty nice. Most of Razer's mice use the palm grip though; I would have to do a little bit of adjusting.

Haha.. sick. Thanks for for the personal experience. For me, I don't use the middle button too often. I like having the two side buttons near the thumb, but everything else is pretty irrelevent to me. I'll be using this mouse for dota and wc3.

The MX518 seems like a pretty nice mouse. After doing a little research on it, I noticed it was the best selling mouse (with the highest reviews) on newegg.com. That says something! :) But the MX518 appears to support the palm grip. You still sue the claw grip with the MX518? Works well or did you have to switch grip styles?

Ohh ok. So that would solve the problem with using the middle button. Hyperscrolling eh? The documents I view are never over 10 pages so it wouldn't be of amazing use to me. Seems like a neat function though (and fun to play with).

I play wc3 and dota. I have played a little first person shooter games, but was never a huge fan. I agree; a light and small mouse is really important. I took a look at both mice and liked the Salmosa. At first glance it seems perfect, but I was concerned with it just being a 3 button mouse. Do you have any experience with SC or WC while using a mouse like the Salmosa? I would like to have a 5 button mouse (utilizing the two buttons by the thumbs) but it's not a must; it's just a luxury.

    lol. defective mouse??

I actually have been looking at the VX Nano. The Revolution seems nice, but perhaps a bit too big for my grip style. I'll be sure to keep in mind that the middle click takes time to be looser.

    o_O

    Hmmmm. I see.

That's great! I'll probably be trying to get a hold of a G9 via ebay/craiglsit to give it a shot. Seems like it got great reviews.
