I'm looking into getting a decent set of 5.1 surround sound headsets. I'm using it just for gaming so I want it to have a microphone built-in. Also I already have very nice speaker/reciever setup but I want these for when my girlfriend is doing work in our office while I'm playing games near her. She needs it to be pretty quiet so I'd like some that keeps game noise in and outside noise out.

I plan on spending about $100 or less.
    Thanks

Below $100, all gaming headsets are about the same. Their sound quality is going to emphasize bloated, heavy bass to give an "oomph" effect from explosions.

To keep it simple, the ones you should check out are:
    Logitech G35 - about $90
    Corsair HS1 - about $60

... with a slight preference to the Corsair HS1. Everyone who has reviewed those all say that you get incredible sound quality for the price you pay, and that they are very comfortable to wear for long periods of time because of the memory foam pads.

Creative soundblaster Arena, around £50 so roughly $100. 5.1, detachable microphone, built in USB soundcard which DOES! produce very good sound quality. It truly does feel like you are imersed in the game.

However it does have its bad points, if you dont take care of your possessions well dont buy this as its doesnt have the best built quality. Secondly it doesnt have the best audio for music. I would reccommend it but as an OK music headset and a very good gaming headset.

For the price you cant argue. Hope this helps. I can post picks or answer any other questions you have.

Usual recommendations for that price range would be the Logitech G35 (if you can find one cheap) or the Plantronics 377.

I think the 377 is just basic stereo. The 777 is the virtual surround version (comes with a usb soundcard dongle).

Stereo gaming headsets are all you need since you'll only be hearing left/right anyway. I had a 5.1 headset before (Cyber Snipa 5.1), but my current headphones (ATH-A700) sound way better and are more practical.

Isn't the Logitech G35 USB? I would prefer one that uses the sound card plugs. A lack of USB ports is also always always a concern for me.

Check out the Plantronics GameCom 777. You can get it on Amazon for $50 now, but this used to be a $100 headset, and it sounds great. Plantronics are a company that makes nothing but headsets, so at the very least they know what they're doing. :p

The 777 includes a detachable USB sound card that processes the virtual 7.1 surround effect. If you remove this USB device, you can use the headset as a normal stereo headset with 3.5mm plugs.

Well the OP asked for surround headsets, so I figured I'd clarify.

I can't speak to gaming headsets, since I have a 5-6 year old Logitech one, but I can attest to plantronics quality. I use a $60 phone headset for work and it's a plantronics and we only use the best HW.
