Can anyone recommend me a backpack that would be a good fit for a T61 and about 6-8 inches worth of books?

My personal favorite is the Eastpak backpack with the suede bottom. Used almost daily for books + laptop for my entire high school and college years!
I usually have a neoprene laptop sleeve if I put a laptop in my backpack... just to add another layer of protection.

I wouldn't recommend placing that many textbooks together with a laptop. I have learnt this the hard way when my laptop screen had cracked (and this was with a neoprene and a normal case, plus the padding from the bag. Personally, I would just get a messenger-style bag in addition to a regular bookbag.

As mentioned something with a suede base seems to last a bit longer, but you will want a notebook sleeve as well. I personally used a targus bag which worked great, but I went through one every year or 2, compared to my roommates (brand unknown) with a suede base going strong on year 3. I am giving Booq a try now.

For that many books it wont be a small bag, you may also want to factor in how much you will actually carry it around and make sure it has enough support. Mine is a BIG campus and I hate to drive from one end to the other between classes so walk alot, chest and waist straps are a godsend!
