    So, my sony Vaio Fw140 is in delivery and i'll be using it for school and taking around the university, since this is my first laptop ever, i'm going to protect it like crazy lol

    I've decided on getting a brain cell from

    http://www.tombihn.com/page/001/PROD/300/TB0300

    BUT! the fw isnt in their list of laptop sizes / etc, so does anyone know what size i need / will work best ?

    Also, anyone have any ideas of other backpacks other than the tombihn bags that will work with the braincell ?

    Will a laptop backpack + Brain cell be enough protection for my investment?

    Take measurements of your laptop, they must at least be on the sony website. Then call up Tombihn and see what they recommend based off the size you tell them. I personally love both the spireusa and booq bags, although both are rather expensive. Then again to protect my laptop the price is easily justifiable to me.

    Also what are you planning on doing to your laptop? Most likely just putting it in a simple sleeve would be fine. Dropping it, kicking it, sitting on it, ect, all those things might warrant extra protection but honestly most of it's probably just your state of mind and what do you feel is right.

    Poster #1 : no sitting on / dropping of / kicking of / etc lol, my main concern is the few days i decide to take the train to school instead of my car and people bumping around on the train..

    Poster #2 : Size is important yes, i agree that trying to make room in a crammed lecture hall would be a pain in the ass, what do you suggest for a backpack that would fit a 16.X" screen but still not be too huge to wear to class ?

    Firstly I go to a fairly large school and even my huge lecture classes have at the very least few empty seats where you can stow your bag. Even if the class has enough people to fill every seat the first day chances are people are either going to not show up or drop the class. If you happen to be in a situation where a class has no empty seats you can just get there early to be able to sit at the end of a row. If its a traditional classroom, you should be able to just put it right next to you. There is no way there won't be enough room for any reasonable backpack in any class you'll be in. A backpack should have no negative effect on your education unless it breaks and you cant carry books around or it hurts your back.

    Brain cell w/ brain bag provides the ultimate protection since there are clips that hold the braincell off the bottom of the bag. This means that if you drop your bag straight down, the full impact of the drop is absorbed by whatever you have in the other compartment since the brain bag has two compartments. If you put the brain bag in a regular backpack you do not have the same protection.

    E-mail Tom Bihn in regards to whether the vertical brain cell will fit your 16" laptop. The bag falls short in width by .2" (on paper), but the folks at TB will answer your e-mail and let you know if the bag has any stretch to it.

    The Booq backpacks in XL size will easily fit 17" laptops. I have one and my 15.4" Lenovo is dwarfed by all of the excess room. Booq's are extremely well built and will last for many, many years. Well worth the price.

    Got a question about that. Let's say you have an extended battery (9-cell in XPS M1530), will it still in a 15.4" backpack (SwissGear Synergy?)

    i was looking at the swissgear pegasus for myself, it might be of use to you, it fits 17" bags and has a nice design, it looks pretty sturdy too and not *too* big from the pictures online, but i cant really judge that cause i havent seen it in real life...

    check it out on amazon

    I like my Python Xl, but not as much as my Brain Bag. The Python XL is being sent in after being used about 12 times because a seam split. The Brain Bag sees 95% of the daily use for the last 20 months.

    Go to the Tom Bihn forum & e-mail or post your questions regarding brain cell size and shipping. They will answer your questions.

    Flounder 911,

    My brain bag (with brain cell and laptop inside) has rolled off chairs and tables 3 to 4 times. I even demonstrate the bag to friends by picking it up & quickly letting it drop 2-3 times in succession from a height of 12". I don't even worry about dropping my bag anymore.

    As far as comfort, here's my bags listed in order of comfort;

    Tom Bihn Brain Bag w/ Brain cell - use this almost every day w/ a 15-17 lbs of gear
    Booq Python XL w/ Tom Bihn Soft cell - Great until the seam split after 12 uses
    Tom Bihn Super Ego w/ Brain cell - incredible with an absolute shoulder strap
    Brenthaven ProLite III - Great for my 17" laptop
    Brenthaven MetroLite II - minimizes load by available size
    Tumi expandable latop brief - retired - split seam at zipper must repair
    Timberland laptop backpack - retired - back & shoulder complains too much
    Kensington Countour backpack - retired - shoulder strap disintegrated

    Waiting to be rotated into duty are;
    Targus 15.4" molded attache
    Targus 15" urban laptop case
