My backpack is only 60% water resistant so I need a notebook sleeve that's 40% water resistant so I'll have 100% water resistant! (**** my math is good!)

    lol...

    Anyway, it's for a 14" widescreen laptop.

actually i myself have been asking the same question.

i like sumdex sleeve but it seems it is not water resistant at all.
i have timbuk2 sleeve (old one- now discontinued) which is
pretty good in terms of protecting against water.

however im getting new lappy which will not fit into this.
    anyone have any recommendation?
(i don't want to pay too much for sleeve by the way)
    thanks

find a big enough zip-lock bag, and I can garuntee it'll keep the water out.

    I thought about the zip-lock bag but I can't find one that's big enough for a 14" laptop that's 1.3" thick.

Well your math is not that good! If the backpack blocks 60% then 40% gets through. Then the sleeve, if 40% will only block 40% of that 40% that gets through so you will end up with 16% of the original moisture getting through! LOL

Anyway you can try this site http://www.slappa.com/

Ortleib makes some waterproof bags that might work. Check out the info at:

    http://www.ortlieb.com/_list.php?lang=en&produkt=5&pname=travel bags

The only truly waterproof bag I've seen was at REI - made of that yellow raincoat stuff. But absolutely no support or padding. Basically just a big bag. But they were selling it as a laptop bag. Maybe a padded sleeve and that would do it, too.

well.. if you put it like that, than both the calculations are incorrect.

Does the water seep through the material? Or does it seep through the openings.
If your bag IS waterproof to a certain extent, it's probably better to get a non-waterproof sleeve. So get something that'll soak up a decent amount of water before it gets through to the laptop.
Somehow, my mom made a sleeve for her laptop I took to Cornell this summer, to keep it from scratching inside my bag.
She made it really quickly with a black/white towel, and she put it together so it actually looked pretty nice, and held it's shape. Of course, one side was left open to slide the laptop in, but I actually liked it a lot better than commercial goods, that doesn't necessarily fit, and is rugged.
It was like a soft sweater, in comparison to a leather jacket.
slip on a soft sweater, casual looking, nice and soft. Leather jacket well... isn't quite as convenient.

plus, your ac adapter and other peripherals are probably more sensitive to water than the laptop itself.
And I really doubt you'll need a waterproof sleeve to keep the laptop dry, unless you're gonna go swimming with it or something, in which case, you'll need a 100% water-resistant sleeve.

tip- save yourself a couple $$$ and find a old t-shirt and a big rubber band to wrap around the laptop.

To help further waterproof your bag, go to any shoe store, actually wal mart should have it, and buy the spray can that waterproofs shoes. A whole can's worth of that should more than go the extra mile. And you can spray it on virtually any material too. The cans run about $5 or so, and last a good while. I know Kiwi makes them, but I'm sure there are other brands.

A scuba diver notebook was the first thing that came to my mind when I read the title. That would be awesome.

While we're all discussing water-proof sleeves, how good is the WaterField sleeve? Would it protect against rain? I'm thinking of getting one for my 15" T60.

If 60% of the water was stopped by the backingpack, the remaining 40% would go through. Well, the bag would only stop 40% of THAT 40%, so still, allowing 60% of the original 40% to be brought in. I don't know if anyone had broken that down yet, but the point is, technically it won't stop it all... but it will stop enough for rain.

I just use the plastic that came with my acer. Then put it in my bag. Works pretty good :)

I also use it at home to keep it dust-free when I not using it.

If you were to use a ZERO Case (Aluminum) or Pelican HARD cases it would be 100%. When I was doing field work I transported my laptop in a 100% water proof case by Pelican that would actually float. On one of my trips there was a huge temp change, cooled off 50 deg F. I had to use the vent screw to equalize the pressure before the lit would open.

There are 100% water proof PC's, just takes $$$$$
