so I've got a toshiba 64gb flashdrive, transmemory. I got some odd issues...

First off i can't format to NTFS, i can do this to my 16gb drive and 32gb memory card without issue. it only allows me to use exFAT.

Second, when i copy files, it seems to corrupt them once i fill to certain amount... again it's only with 64gb storage.

Video gets displayed as no sound, with a grey screen and some stationary dots on it... now once it starts botching up the data, it seems to "copy" my things at 25mb/s which is pretty much where usb2.0 maxes out,,,

my external hdd works fine too, so i'm really rather baffled as to WT* is going on... could it be cause i copy things straight from external HDD to the flashdrive? Maybe cause i copy 15gb at a time...? the flash drive itself doesn't heat up much or anything...

I have opened it up and by serial number it does have a 64gb nand chip on it, unlike them chinese fakes that show 64gb but actually are 8gb... (yes i had one of those once)

anyways need some brain storming to come up with a solution? ill test on a different laptop in a few days, never have encountered this though?

OS is win 7 ultimate 64bit, laptop details in signature.

edit/update so i ran benchmark on the toshiba drive, which seems to be epic fast or epic broken...

and when empty... well its been quite a long time now http://gyazo.com/24878ea0cdd009101c6d4f35ce270676
    still haven't finished...

for comparison my cheapo Lexar drive which is USB 3.0 http://gyazo.com/7517d3e242e3c5180a2af0b6b704df6e

also the data doesn't seem to get corrupted if i copy stuff from my internal SSD... which is weird. I'll get back with an update... but could someone explain what i'm missing with this miraculous speed bump on write speed once it is filled over 10%?

Alright, so last edit i guess, for conclusion DO NOT BUY ANY FLASH STORAGE OFF EBAY. returned 2 already, don't seem to be any legit usb devices there at all. Found forum posts on google about how 64GB does not equal 64Gb, either way most of these drives are formatted as holding 64.2Gigabytes of actual PC storate not bits, they seem to all be blatant rip offs, some of which have a complete seizure after you try to fill more than 6016Mb of actual storage (yes i tested actual storage, it is actual data which stays on the drive, after that it just creates corrupt data making it look legitimate, icons and everything.) one i got this time ill just keep for trivial unimportant crap i got, here's some pictures, most of them actually look completely legitimate... packaging and everything.

vid and pid are 0011 7788 , however do seem to be knocked off off some other chinese knock off, as official flashing/formatting tool by alcor micro doesn't have effect on it. googling for serial numbers on both controller or NAND bring up nothing too. All i can do is imagine they are made in some cave in china under a large rock and get shipped over outside of china as legitimate goods. wasted quite a while on this xD hope theres some nerds like me who find this crap interesting.

One can be sure most if not all items come from China good and bad products. Have you tried on larger flash memory? I seen 128GB memory sticks... for like a cool 60US...I was like wow. Talk about lost data try loosing 128GB of flash memory data???? But I would try another product and see if the problem doesn't happen again and it not then the stick you have it bad or poorly made.

The reason I ask is because I bought a mophie product (external battery case for iphone) on ebay for approximately 25 bucks. When it came into the mail, it looked EXACTLY like the packaging including the product itself. However, after a few days, the case stopped charging.

I went to the official Mophie website and realized it was a cheap knockoff. I was sad =(

well the toshiba looked legitimate in packaging, was sealed "brand new". Not chinese seller. another one was clearly a chinese no brand one, but i had bought one ages ago, an 8gb one at a shop which worked perfectly well.

and no, i am in UK, bought both from UK sellers. but when i had a better look it seems to be full of them... Unless you know and don't try to put much data initially after a month or so, since they don't give a warranty, you won't be able to return it, cause you're no longer covered by that online purchase return act thing. I assume thats what they're praying on... i had a few and they all seem to have identical hardware markers appearing, same VID and PID, so i assume all of them actually come from same place more or less, just in different plastic covers to make them look more legitimate.

basically best not to get flash memory off ebay nowadays it seems.

Yeah. Don't buy USB flash drives from eBay. It is possible to reflash the controller on a USB drive so it thinks it has more memory than what the flash chips can store.

Think of it this way... someone buys a bunch of 1GB USB Flash drives, rewrites the controller so that it appears as if it is a 16GB drive when you plug it into a computer, and then sells them as counterfeit 16GB flash drive on eBay. The seller is usually located outside of the United States, and does not accept returns. You are screwed.

The best bet when buying USB flash drives is to buy from a retailer that has a very good return policy (Costco, Amazon), or buy a brand that has very good warranty. Generally, you want to stay away from brands for any computer product hat do not have a US-based mailing address for RMAs, because it will be a giant pain in the event that you ever need to send a product back for warranty reasons.

Kent, thats good advice, i was trying to highlight that on ebay theres a lot of legitimate looking flash drives too, as you can see from photos it looks like a pretty genuine toshiba stick. even has 64gb printed on it as well as on the back and everything, formatted to 64gb, this toshiba is actually pretty smart too, as you wouldn't notice it corrupts files until you tried to access some old files, i tried filling it then copying some new content, it copies them fine and quickly, then plays the video file... corrupts files in the middle kind of, as oldest files were fine. unless you check them on day one, you'd miss it and couldn't return under the 7day return policy ebay has.

there were other ones too, solid looking ones at that, 64GB USB STICK FLASH PEN DRIVE MEMORY STICK SWIVEL 64 GB USB 2.0 HIGH SPEED | eBay i had an 8gb stick from an actual shop, identical looking to this and it was perfectly fine. most of them you can tell fakes that come with packaging, no brand and looks like its made with paint and a hint of MS word '98. Still some look completely legit kingston etc. branded ones...
