all my system does now is check cable connection ! pxe-mof exiting pxe rom, dont know whats happened if the 1tb hd packed in now or what, dont know what im doing in the bios its well complicated for me ive done defaults etc and also tried recovery usb to at least get back up and running till i get something sorted with this m2 ssd but i cant suss it out !! im now sick and wish id never bought it and wish id never pulled the hd cable from the board
cant figure out what settings should be in bios and windows was on the 1tb but cant get up and running
feel like ive got a £600 brick now and need this for going on my holiday
-
I'm confused, you removed a cable from the motherboard and it's complaining about that? If that's the case then it seem like you either damaged the cable somehow or didn't reconnect it properly.
-
hardrive is showing in bios and i can see light flickering when accesing it,i tried a usb recovery but it fails at 98%,think ive messed up the settings in bios somewhere
pulled the hardrive cable from motherboard when i was trying to add the m2ssd which is not working, ive had the day from hell on this laptop and its now an expensive brick !!
usual supposed to be an easy addon m2ssd and turns into a nightmare !Last edited by a moderator: Dec 15, 2016 -

Can you list exactly the steps you took that led up to this?
What is happening now is that your system cannot find a bootable drive so it is looking to the network card to boot from there. One setting to look at in your BIOS is whether UEFI is turned on or not.Dannemand, toughasnails and hmscott like this. -
Hi,unplugged power lead to motherboard then unplugged 1tb hardrive lead also to motherboard, put the new m2 ssd in but upside down as it's the only way it would go in to slot so sticker that shows on the ssd was underneath, plugged power lead back on & left hardrive lead off & laptop would not power on,tried the power button a few times but wouldn't come on so I plugged the hardrive cable back on board and tried again but still nothing ! Took ssd back out and laptop powered back up but would not go into windows so I went into bios in a panic and mucked about abit & cant get it going now, don't know if the m2 ssd is faulty or what but I've got nothing workin now
-
Which m.2 drive do you have? On mine, the sticker and chips are on top.
-
just get it serviced m8 if you are hopeless...before you cause any more potencial damage

Well i dont want to insult you. But you might installed your m2 ssd the wrong way. Also i saw your other topoc and you night ruined the screw of the backpanel which is not supposed to be removed fully. Only need to screw them loose until you hear a click. Then pull the plate up.
For an ssd to install you have to work around secure boot. -
Will post pics later to show the m2ssd and inside my laptop

So..that just tells me all I need to know to decide which one of us here is actually the IDIOT.

No need to go calling each other names, we're all trying to help here.

Fixed your image link (you need to link to the image file instead of the imgur page). Looks like the pins are at least intact. I'm not entirely sure how you would put it in the wrong way since it is keyed. Will the system not power on at all with the m.2 inserted?

is it me or is this wrong m2ssd ? u see it will only fit if i turn it over ?? this is why im scratching my head
-
how much m.2 ssd slots does your system have and can you take a picture of the whole back side of the laptop so I can see what model is yours.
-
its got 2 i can see,its alienware 15 R2 i5 with 16gb ram and gtx 970 and 1tb hardrive
-
-
Edit: The R1 also has two other m.2 slots which are obstructed by the Hard Drive -
If your Alienware is an older model (i.e. 15R2, 15R1), and you are attempting to install an NVME (PCIE x4) ssd, then it *will not* work because the data bus only supports SATA III. Could you provide the spec for your SSD?
-
cant boot as i cant get into windows ! model number is p42f
service tag is j1bdn32
cant find if R2 or R1
found another number on base says R-4 1000299 ? -
Not the model number of the device, I mean what is the SSD you are trying to install? I see now that you most certainly have an Alienware 15 R1, so NVME SSDs are not compatible.
-
Intel 600p 256GB M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD/Solid State Drive
-
-
And therein lies your issue. Your SSD is incompatible, as your motherboard does not support Non-Volatile Memory Express (NVMe) PCIe bus for storage. Return the 600p and get one of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=0D9-0006-000G3
Also, the connector between the SATA HDD and the motherboard is usually pretty tricky, so I'm not surprised it's still disconnected. Remove it again, line it up carefully, and press firmly until you hear a click and it gives noticeably -- not too much pressure, but enough to re-seat it. With a different SSD and re-seating of your HDD connector your AW15 should be running just fine once more. -
was advertised as R2 so have i been robbed ? is R1 still decent enough and can someone help with a decent m.2 sata ssd in same price bracket £100
the 1tb hd is showing in the bios i wasnt before but to be honest i dont know how to setup in bios now as i done factory defaults
is this the one i can go for ?
SanDisk 256GB X400 Fast M.2 SATA SSD/Solid State Drive
its on scan.co.uk -
You should go with this Samsung is a good brand. Don't know if you should keep it it's up to you just check how much you spent on it and see if it's ok with you.

either is fine for me as i can contact scan send this back and get the one i need !! at least im getting to the bottom of this now thanks to all
-
i knew there was something not right with the ssd as any idiot can surly plug an ssd in to the port !
-
Yes absolutely go with the 850 EVO, the only reason I did not recommend it at first was because it is nearly double the cost in US prices,
It could be a 15 R2 as well, as the chassis is identical.gritts likes this. -
u know what the previous owner sent this back about 3 months ago for hd replacement and courier dropped it ! they had to replace all case covers on laptop,i have the paperwork
will phone scan tommorow and send this back for replacement
having a nightmare folks
