a couple R3 13" questions

looking to buy that 7700 R3 13", and i have a few questions regarding the overall machine.

DISPLAY
1) how much more battery can i squeeze out of the laptop if i went with the FHD version over the OLED version?
2) is burn-in a real problem? i don't plan on leaving a static image on display for over an hour, but it still scares me if i do get the OLED version.
3) how much Adobe RGB coverage does the FHD have?

TRACKPAD
1) is it glass or plastic?

LONGEVITY/GENERAL QUESTIONS
1) if i go with a 16 gig/i7-7700/1060, how many years of solid mid to semi-high end gaming can i get out of this?
2) how much bloatware is there as soon as you get it from Dell?
3) can the battery be replaced without me having to send to Dell? how difficult is it for a normal person to replace the battery on their own - without professional help?
4) i don't have the luxury of seeing this laptop in person, but how big or compact does the machine feel for a 13"? i know it's a little over 5 pounds, but can it easily fit into a semi small laptop bag?
5) supposing you don't know what Alienware is, if you are sitting in a cafe and see someone using this specific device, would you think the laptop is too gaudy looking?

1) Long answer: not enough to make it worth getting the IPS FHD display. The reason to get the AW 13 is the OLED screen. There are better gaming notebooks in this size/ weight class with IPS display.
Short answer: 30 - 40 min (depending on screen brightness and black content etc... will gain battery if viewing black background content)

2) Not really, OLED tech is good as long as you take care of not having static images constantly. Also if worried you can get AW warranty at any time (say 1.5 years from now you start to have a problem, buy the warranty then and there and they will take care of it)

3) No idea, but as said in 1, better IPS laptops available

4) Plastic trackpad, its decent, but I am hardly a trackpad power user

5) Only game developers can tell you that (with evolving engines and new consoles etc..) based on history, with the current GTX 1060 capable of 1080p ulra settings @ 60 fps in almost every current game; would say 3 years till everything is on medium (unless VR becomes the future of gaming, but I hope not, it makes me motion sick)

Remember the AMP is available for external graphics, that should extend its life

6) not much. Killer network software, Dell registration software, and Tobii Eye gimmick (just bloatware without the full Tobii harware in the AW 17)

7) Yes, and a lot of screws, but you don't need to remove the motherboard heat-sink or anything.

8) its the dimensions of a normal 14" laptop.

9) Fortunately its not as guady as its bigger siblings. Doesn't have the lighting strips along the sides. You can mod the lights to be white, and easily turn off the logos (head and screen bezzel) from lighting up. Can also turn trackpad light off. Would say not distracting at all with those lights off.

 

i get that there are other laptops for sure. but im seeing a good sale on Dell's site for this setup. and it's the best deal i can find for a machine with these kinds of specs.

 

Oh, I see, a sale. Yes its a decent IPS laptop (but with most IPS laptops light-bleed is a rampant issue that is a roll of the dice), would really save up $ for the OLED though, it is amazing

 

i am leaning towards the OLED version, my main concerns were burn-in and if i'd get a decent return in battery if i went with the FHD one. an hour tops doesnt sound too convincing. thanks for the quick replies.

 

I have been using an oled for about 2 weeks and I must say its amazing. Its really worth every penny. I am kinda picky on displays though but once you use this for a while its really hard to go back to anything else.

 

I'm pretty sure touchpad is frosted matte looking glass. My friend has a alienware 14 with frosted finish peeling off after like 3 years of usage. There is a opaque glossy glass underneath. It is a glass touchpad with coating on top. I'm pretty sure they haven't changed the lightup touchpad since the introduction of aw14/17 in 2014

regarding batterylife for oled qhd vs ips fhd, I'm pretty sure you can get better batterylife on oled if you keep everything in dark themed background most of the time. My galaxy tabpro s, which has amoled panel, uses significantly less power (i think) since I have background set as black.
I couldn't compare ips vs oled power usage difference, but i know that oled uses less power if you have dark/black on your screen

 

Other 13inch gaming laptops? You pretty much only have the aorus and that one is worse.

Also if you put the 14 inch models in the equation the aw13r3 is the top.

 

The Gygabyte Areo 15 holds the crown here (for IPS). 2" more screen with same area (+1" wide - 1" Long on Areo 15) and 0.4 KG lighter. MUCH better battery life with +2 hours. Almost exact same performance on Notebookcheck benchmarks. Very good build quality. Better I/O selection (but AW has the AGA port, so there is a trade-off here)

The Aorus X3 is also Technically more powerful with a HK CPU. I haven't been following how it has been performing though.

 

I had a gigabyte, borrowed and aorus and checked out the aorus 14. All had thermal issues out of the box, very very poor build quality and the gigabyte p34wv3 and aorus x3 that i checked had very quickly decreasing battery health within weeks. So no i dont think they are equal. The aero15 uses the same battery as the aorus so people can once again brace themselves for problems down the road.

The HK in the aorus is like the HK in the razer blade pro. Aka you cant overclock it long term.

I would take the aw13r3 even with fhd screen any day of the week over those. Had to replace my gigabyte 3 times in 2 months and i never could get a model without issues. Send it back and got an AW.

 

Reports show the Areo 15 in a different quality class even to the 14; but if you had hands on with Gigabyte I would defer to your judgement; I havent. No one offers the support AW gives (which isn't saying much). Even with the AW 13 you are very lucky not to have thermal issues out of the box; a repaste is a must on any OEM gaming laptop unfortunately (factory paste is a joke ).

I still think anyone would have to be completely Daft to get the AW 13 R3 and NOT save up to get the OLED screen
