Was A06 the finale?

i have good temps with IC diamond, but we can make better tables, for expample each fan have his own steps, but if you put both as the same speed, the CPU benefits a lot of this. this is due to the GPU didnt reach more than 68°C and his fan spin really slow, and is only 1 heatsink (gpu and cpu are conected)

The 90c you reach because the fans are hardly spinning at that moment. Using different thermalpaste would just make the fan run even lower because the temp is already good enough. The fan tables of this laptop are aiming for silent operation. To be honest I do not mind it. It makes the lifespan of the fans more long lasting.

How do you manually adjust fan speed with A00 BIOS? -

Alienware 17 R2 is broken. No matter what BIOS, temperature runs very high and I can never hear the fans spinning. They're loudest when flashing the BIOS lol
-
I've stuck with the A06 and it idles at 50'c and under load reached max of 88'c playing assetto corsa for the CPU and 66'c for my 980m for 1/2 and hour. -
i don't need that they release a new Bios with his fan tables, i want to do mine !!!!!!
is just a simple thing, i don't know why they never hear us. Is my third alienware and they never solve a problem, i always need to search the solution by my own. I don't want to use HWinfo, i want to use alienware BIOS and change it -
All brands have software to change the fan speed less alienware. (msi, aorus, gigabyte, clevo, etc...)

Software fan control where you can set the fan speed vs temperature on a curve is the solution to this.
I don't know why Alienware don't incorporate it into their Command Center. It is definitely something that they are behind on compared to other gaming laptop vendors.
The thing is they would make a lot of their own customers very happy by simply adding this and they would significantly reduce the amount of complaints they get due to BIOS updates/fan tables and over heating issues with warm keyboards.
If they offered a simple solution for everyone to set their own fan tables to their own comfort levels, be it heat or noise, then everyone would be happy.
It would be a win - win situation!judal57 likes this. -

That would be great. But I doubt DELL change. The truth is that the new product line AW has problems such as:
1. Throttle CPU.
In my case, playing continuously BF4 clocks down to 2.8 GHz. It just keeps the maximum speed (3.8 GHz) seconds. If I want to run at a steady rate without fluctuations should lower clocks to 3.3 GHz. I have 240W adapter and the Bios A00. To solve this problem I have updated the Bios A00 - A06, use ThrottleStop the Undervolting, but the problem continues. The problem is the bad joke Bios and the limitations Intel has put all in the Cpu garbage BGA. I honestly do not think DELL is not aware of this problem, in this forum there are many who have that problem.I called the technical support but they say that's normal, the computer is running normally and no official information on that problem.
2. High temperatures (except for the A00 bios).
The temperature problem is most evident in the BIOS from A05. The A06 has tried to improve the table of the fans, but temperatures still remain high. It is true that using a thermal paste better helps a lot, but it is a temporary solution and not everyone wants to disassemble its AW to apply the thermal paste.
The proposal to use third party software to regulate the speed of the fans is good and appreciated but that the final customer has to make a living. It would be simpler to design their own application DELL for consumers we manage the speed as we come better. It's pure logic. -

To put it into perspective.
Look at the attached file. This is while rendering for 30 minutes a complex 3d scene ment for product photos art. When running idle its hovering around the 65c with the fans not spinning at all.
This is perfectly normal behavious for a laptop this class, size and performance. It reached a max temp of 88c. Uses both the GPU and all CPU cores and rather fairly mild fan noise. There is a lot of complaining on this forum about these laptops but to be honest I feel a lot is unwarranted. This is real world usage, professional use and my bread and butter. I wouldn't use this laptop if it was crap.Attached Files:

The excuse is that the fans arent even running at idle mode. While the Macbooks are still blowing air even in idle mode. That is the difference. Most of the iitnernals are used in the Alienware for extra hardware by the way and heatsink. The Alienware has too cool much more heat producing hardware. So thi sis why it is bigger. I had a Gigabyte p34wv3 which was a bit thicker only compared to a Macbook pro retina 13inch and had the same hardware as an AW15. Now that laptop was compromised, not did it had poor build quality it ran very very very hot with fairly loud fan noise. While gaming it was throttling almost constant and was only stable with undervolting and repasting. The temps where the same as the AW15 while idle but with a much more fan noise.
Regarding the temps
80C Hot (100% Load)
75C Warm
70C Warm (Heavy Load)
60C Norm
50C Norm (Medium Load)
40C Norm
30C Cool (Idle)
This is what intel states regarding temperatures and a temp on desktop CPU's. Laptop CPU's run hotter but I couldnt find a source quickly. But I just run average 84c and max 88c on 100% full load on a laptop. There is nothing wrong with those temps.

You can begin to ask yourself; Is this is a problem or not. And you start to think on; Why so many laptop owners complaining about the high temperature. Everyone is not likewise screwed.Last edited: Oct 31, 2015 -
If my temps rise in 2 years time, I will just repaste it. But I doubt it will dry a lot. Till now I havent had any laptop or PC with dried out thermal paste ever. -
If you read my previous post I said that the problem because of the heat normally comes after a while. Certainly after the warranty has expired . Many pc owners do not know what to do when the problem occurs. The solution to those who are not so clever is to allow a computer repair shop do the job. No good solution. Cost $$$. Many laptops must be completely dismantled to fix the paste. Therefore, keep the temperatures as low as possible. A good advice from me .Last edited: Oct 31, 2015 -
For me these temperatures are high .... and in a few years need technical support to replace any part of the hardware.
I compared my temperature with yours, I have the A06 bios - PSU 240w, Undervoltd, thermal paste IC Diamond.

The parts itself wont die out with the temps that I have, I did not apply any undervolting yet by the way. You got some nice temps though. The repasting did a lot for your rig i think.
Dont forget that the GPU was active as well when I was running Cinema 4D for rendering. -
-
Since setting up my macro keys to have 1 = power 2 = balanced and 3 = powersaver, my idle temps on 3 is circa 38-40 'c
I have also undervolted and overclocked so running at 3.5mhz with a -50mv see a max of 81'c running Assetto Corsa. I also reverted back to A00 BIOS -
-
I have tuned the settings in XTU and now have a -80mv undervolt going stable withotu any overclocking. Keeps the turboboost 100% 3.4ghz which is the default. Temps are 77c while undervolted but the fans hardly spin at all.

As a temporary solution to the problem using ThrottleStop, Undervolt, new thermal grease. But tech support says the operation is normal ..... I'm not the only one with this problem but Dell does not care about their customers the important thing is to sell.
These results are before you apply IC Diamond:
1. Result without the use of ThrottleStop - Undervolt. Bios A00.
2. Results with ThrottleStop - Undervolt. Bios A06.
Without an BIOS that fixes this problem of limited power, I have few options more than sell my equipament.
We'll see if Dell releases a new Bios A07 but I do not solve my problem. -
-
-
it happened because the processor need more voltage to stay stable at high clocks, but you reduced it, so the processor need to reduce the voltage to stay at (-80 mV) that is when you see thermal throttling.
i will upload you some pics to show you -
As you can see in the following images:
1. Without any adjustment, all stock:
2. Applying a undervolt of -40 mV, the result is the same.
2.1Applying a undervolt of -45mV (CPU Core) / 25mV (CPU Cache), the result is the same.
3. Applying a undervolt of -70 mV (CPU Core) / 50mV (CPU Cache), the result changes little.
In conclusion, I suspect that in the bios there is a limitation to the power of the CPU, unfortunately I do not think I can be anything from software. To solve the problem would need a bios unblocked. However, I doubt that the next Bios A07 solve my problem because Dell knows but has no interest to correct the throttling limit.
As data to take into account, I have found that Intel Platform & Thermal Dynamic Framework prevents the CPU reach 58w. Before uninstalling this application never pass 47W but now I do (a few seconds). -

go into Command prompt
type powercfg /L
this lists all of the power configs
Then create the bat file i.e
Balanced
Powercfg /s 381b4222-f694-41f0-9685-ff5bb260df2e
assign .bat file to a macro keyjudal57 likes this. -

While I suspect you will find a nice amount of information in there, I'll summarize... your CPU is the problem. It will, no matter what BIOS you use, ever, under any circumstances, pass 47W under a long period of power draw. It is BY DESIGN by BGAtel, and the Skylake CPUs being clocked so low (3.4GHz on 4 cores is the FASTEST non-overclocked mobile skylake CPU there is... 3.7GHz was around since Sandy Bridge) is an attempt to avoid them hitting their limits while getting "full performance" even though their end performance hasn't improved (and compared to even a 4810MQ at stock, far less a 4910MQ or 4930MX, has actually decreased). -
