Why no 7820HK and GTX 1080 on the New AW 17?

So I'm looking to get a new AW 17 and I'd like to have it with the 7820HK and the GTX 1080 but it doesn't seem like that configuration can be configured.

I already have an AW 13 with a 6820 so I don't want the 6820 again and the 1080 is a significant jump over the 1070.

Any idea why these aren't configurable together?

    Thanks!

Could be that it's not available yet. I mean, the 7820HK is only 5% faster than the 6820HK - it's such a small difference that it's basically pointless to upgrade.

Highly unlikely - you see, unlike a desktop where a 7700K pulling 30W more than a 6700K is no biggie, on a laptop, that is massive. Even 10W can be a massive jump. I seriously doubt the 7820HK will be able to deliver enough of a performance jump even when overclocked to warrant an upgrade for enthusiasts. It just seems like a waste of money to me. Which is sad. Intel have really done next to nothing this gen to improve CPU performance.

you could be right or not .... but a real deal is upgrading the gtx 1070 for a gtx 1080 :)

True - that is a thing to consider. Though I'd argue that a 1080 is way overkill for what most people will play at 1080p or 1440p

7920HK + 1080 together will be available End of Feb or Early March.
Remember each config is a different motherboard.
That config mobo will be in stock then.

will it have the ugly TN panel? the NEW Alienware 7820HK + GTX 1080? or would be actually get the UHD option.

Its really sad when you spend THIS much money on a laptop you have to build the thing yourself.

True - though it could also die sooner due to higher heat and internal temps of the die and area. Heat does reduce chip lifespan.

This is the reply Dell Canada gave me. Mind you I am already pissed at them for trying to sell me things I do not want. It's like they can't tell the difference from this and this NOT this and this

Though out this experience I wasted 4 hours. Where when I called back the agents kept jumping ships and no one would help or explain why I can't confirm my order (you know be a Dell. Cheapen out when and where ever they can) I sent Umair this because the 2nd agent I called after this didn't want any record of her talking.

    My thoughts when reading:

Honestly, as soon as you lose your calm, you are significantly reducing your chances of receiving quick and proper support.
Just a small piece of advice I've learned the hard way.

I am a Canadian of color, I am a Indian Canadian. I immigrated from India to Canada and got my citizenship. I do not care who i am talking with as long as I get the information I am looking for.

My outburst is due to the continues fabulous support Dell Alienware employs delivers to the Canadian Citizen.

"hello how are you? I am looking for a Alienware 6820hk with GTX 1080 but instead of the TN panel, would it be possible to do a custom order with the UHD display?"

"Yes NA let me talk to my supervisor"

    5h later

"NA I talked with my supervisor and yes we can"

Gives me a link to Alienware 17 r4 6820hk with GTX 1080 and a TN pannel.

lol one time I was about to order and my brother told me to look thought the parts and i did, I though he (dell Alienware Canada Sales rep) agreed to UHD and it ended up being a TN panel on the invoice.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yes i should not have screamed at him but at Dell Alienware for hiring him. They never gave a clear cut answer for the entire time i was communicating with them, and yes I did call the states and a nice gentalmen picked up, first i though "oh gosh not again" after hearing his name, but the person was very VERY helpful. He informed me that Dell Alienware does not do preorder no matter the circumstances. Thus goes to prove that EVEN if Dell outsources its Customer Service to India. The good ones they keep for the states thus leaving Canadians in the dirt.

btw this employee from the Dell Alienware US, I wasted 5 min of my time and guess what. I loved him for it. I swear I even told him that they should fire the entire Canada team (regardless of color, just wipe them out, the entire team) and have the US division in charge of Dell Canada. I would strongly advice dell to do it. So instead of giving phony hours Canadains can have a 24/7 sales team.

I was mad at the wrong people I agree and I felt sorry that I took the anger out on him BUT Dell should not hire people that cannot communicate properly. I do not want to call Dell Alienware Canada or talk to there sales team. Not just this person. To ANYONE currently in Dell Alienware Canada that is how bad the sales team is.

Good job judging an entire customer support division based on one negative experience. That's some mighty fine logic right there. Honestly, if you were to ever deal with Razer or Acer support, you'd likely go insane considering how quick to anger you get. I mean, Dell's support is top-notch from what I've read and interacted with them.

btw I was with them Since November and I kept checking in the hopes that somone would agree to the custom order (dell Alienware Canada) and I as nice. Now i am just tired.

Just buy the UHD pannel and while I am at it. 1tbx 2 Samsung 960 EVO, 2tb Samsung 850 EVO, Intel 8265, Corsair Vengeance® Series 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4 SODIMM 2666MHz. All this was going to go to Dell Alienware but now it is getting redirected out. Speak with what hurts, the $$.

As a fellow Canadian I can understand your frustration .I always get stressed when dealing with Dell customer service. I may push but I'm not rude. You don' t have to insult the other person because it's not going as smoothly as you want. How would you feel if someone talked to you like that while you were working with Apple?

Umm okay, so back to the topic of an i7 7820hk and GTX 1080.

I am pretty curious on whether a non G Sync display for laptops will be supported for laptops with GTX 1080.

It should be I guess? But most of the other laptops with GTX 1080s like MSI, Razer, Acer seem to be using G Sync displays.

Although other than the priceless ASUS ROG GX800, not sure if this liquid cooling monster is using a G Sync Display or not.

(I personally cannot use a G Sync Display due to battery life for school work cum everyday use. 3 Hours is too short for me. I need the up to 6 hours battery for everyday use without the use of any ware to undervolt and etc.)

It does support it. That as why I was on the phone and online since (when did the Stupid TN pannel GTX 1080 get released?) talking (while being nice) and trying to get a custom one made by Dell.

My theory was that IF it didn't support it then anything beyond a GTX 1070 will be useless. Thus no GTX 1080 or titan X pascal will work if you hooked them up with a Alienware External GPU because as we all know Nvidia stopped making mobile chips.

I called and confirmed that I was right UHD is compatible with the GTX1080.

    Pro setup
    Alienware 7820hk
    GTX 1080
    UHD display
2x Samsung 960 EVO 1tb (or go for the pro with 2tb)
    1x Samsung 850 EVO 2tb (or 4tb)
    Intel 8265
    Corsair Vengeance® Series 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4 SODIMM 2666MHz

    External GPU
EVGA's Hybrid Titan X pascal (they are working on it)

    do it like a pro.

So, I just went to the Dell Retail Store Singapore, yesterday.

A staff member said, that other customizable models like an i7-7820HK and GTX 1080 with an IPS QHD or UHD display will be available soon, estimated at March.

As Dell/Alienware US releases their models earlier, we should expect this particular model to be available soon. :)

Think EVGA is coming out with the Titan X hybrid this week.... and people petitioned for that lol. Alienware buyers.... Sad

Me not so much.... Fingers crossed thou... No jinxing.

    But to the point

    https://twitter.com/aw_umar/status/819271785912946692

"Keep getting asked this [by everyone on twitter] but the @Alienware 17 [r4] will launch with a config of Intel 7820HK + Nvidia Geforce GTX 1080 between Feb/[March]"

So 3rd of 4th week February or 1st or 2nd week March is what I am guessing.

I'm in the market for a new machine myself. I've read alot about the issues with the QHD screen on here, how is this UHD IPS display? I would think that is a nice looking display. I would be plugging into an X34 Predator and Rift VR on my desk, only looking at the laptop panel when using it for work away from my home office...rarely for gaming.

They have a new QHD display. The lines are now gone.
If you have the ones with the lines tech support will replace the LCD.
If you order a new system as of March 16th, the previous problems discussed about the QHD and the lines do not apply.

I'm assuming they'll have an UHD option with the 7820hk/1080 configuration?

(AU website still not showing the 1080 available in any configuration yet)

Not much of an overclocker but I will probably be repasting it . . . never did that before and nervous about it but with the video's around I should be able to do it.

I'm not sure what the best paste to use is tho - this will be travelling occasionally so I think that rules out liquid metal?

    Great site and forum!

One showed up on Costco site last week. Costco has since pulled it off their site which they do when they sell out.
    Alienware 17 Gaming Laptop,
    Intel Core i7-7820HK ,
    8GB Graphics, QHD (2560 x 1440), G-Sync Display
    i7-7820HK
    32gb ddr4 2400,
    256GB SSD + 1TB HDD
    Was Item# 1129161

I don't know what NIC is included,
Price was a little less than dell.com

I did get one ordered, Today Costco sent and email of a delay due to large demand, which I'm sure is because of this forum, and all the fixes people pushed for.

The estimated ship date April 17th.

I'm replacing a laptop that has around 2.3TB of storage. I'll look to change the HHD to a SSD, and add a 1TB 2280 PCIE when storage prices drop, if they drop. :)

What can go in that m.2 2242 drive slot? I can find some smaller SATA but no PCIE. Is this m.2 2242 meant for some future developments? or is it already obsolete?

So it seems every other region has a 1080 / 7820HK configuration available except Australia - again.

(We always seem to be the last to be updated and no one can tell me when it might be available).

Just got it yesterday and slowly setting it up and I guess about to watch the video on breaking it all down.

Trying to figure out when I will have time to do that and now need to get some gloves as I read you shouldn't directly touch the pads . . . so I might not do the repaste until next week.

A bit annoyed as it only has 2 standard usb ports but 2 type c ports . . . . I need the 4 ports so I guess I have to order a few converters or a new hub.

Temps don't seem too bad - ran a firestrike and it came in at 15,544 - this was after updating to the latest nvidia drivers - the original drivers came in at 15,424 and the temps were lower then below.

    gpu maxed out at 64
    cpu package maxed at 73
    cores were maxed at 72, 69, 73, and 67
    pch was maxed at 60

Got mine. Very nice system. Solid build. Extraordinary speed. Great QHD display.

    Alas
Network - drops about every 30 minutes - got hold of dell but replacing drivers didn't help
Tobii - for some reason, coming out of sleep sometimes it locks up. Again updating drivers didn't help. Also seems drifts out of calibration.
Alienfx - all the lights went black. I found a fix to delete the USB device and restart. That worked for a while

    3-strikes and it's out.
Going back tomorrow. I am petty.
Yet - I'll try again in 3-months because with everyone's help on this forum, Alienware might just have the system to get.

PS Toshiba drive was fine for me but it wasn't the best they could have put in there.
