I've had several brands of laptops, I have a 960 evo 1T and why does Alienware make it so difficult to swap them out ahhhhh? All the others are pretty much plug and play. Ahhh
Anyone know how to do it?
I mean how can it be set up in raid when there is only one hdd? Why can't they use AHCI like everyone else ahhhh

The AHCI and RAID are more so a step beyond the traditional protocol now....RAID doesn't mean fully (only specifically) for RAID purposes...

ACHI is an older protocol like BIOS for example where as RAID is like UEFI, if that makes senses.

RAID does not mean you have to run two SSD's.

Here's how you install the m.2:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...up-your-samsung-950-pro-m-2-ssd-17-r3.787205/

    Update:

PM me...there's obviously something not right so I wouldn't keep blaming the hardware. You have a Samsung 960 EVO right? That's one of, actually the best m.2 SSD you can get next to the 960 Pro lol...

I'll see what I can do to help, but it's best to avoid creating a thread to vent, rather there are a lot of guys in the Owners Lounge that can help as well. I'm sure you're not the first to have encountered this problem.

This is ridiculous, I've done this to the predator 17 X, and MSI GT 73, and a AORUSX7, and an Asus and I have never had any issues it was seriously just plug in play.

Something else must be wrong here.
There are plenty of people that run 950/960 evos and pros and get maxed out balls to the wall performance.
However we need more details. When did you get this. What drivers have you changed. Which slot is it in.

And just to back up what unlock said yes that setting the BIOS that says "RAID" is just a different controller then AHCI.
AHCI is still an option too. With that said AHCI is a much older controller technology which is why they leave it on RAID.
Technically speaking you should get higher performance on RAID, however tests show its marginal at best.

Maybe install the nvme driver from samsung? It all changed with nvme drives that instant plug and play.

I'm running my 1TB Samsung 960 Pro without any drivers and it's blazing fast. ~3500/~2200.

I think OP's issue is something else...

Here's a screen shot of a 3GB and 5GB hot run after playing OW. No Drivers Installed.

Clean Windows 10 install, only installed the stock drivers that is needed and that's it.

This is without the Samsung drivers.

I did that to, could it be the intel rapid storage technology causing an issue maybe?

Ok it's an R4 laptop 7820 with 1070, the stick is a 960 evo 1T, it's in slot 3 which is the slot the stock one was in and it's set to AHCI in the bios. I do have the nvme driver from Samsung and the magician. When I test the speed on the magician it's crazy fast, but super slow when I try to look at the drivers and folders it's takes minutes to pull up the info when I click on This PC or trying opening the file explorer...

I have a 500gb 960 evo I just cloned the Dell HDD to, I'm getting 2100 and 1650 for sequential 3gb, so the drive appears to be working well, although it shows up in the Samsung magician software as an unknown drive for some reason?

i just bought my Samsung SSD 960 EVO 1tb, and now, watching this topic and the tutorial of @iunlock , im seeing that it is not that easy to install the ssd.... i though it was only plug, format, set boot in BIOS, and clean install of windows.
Im currently using a HDD 7200 rpm.

To install it, i have to change RAID to AHCI and after that i can go back to RAID? And do i have to remove my hdd?

Yes, make sure only your m.2 is plugged in.

    Keep it on RAID.

    Proceed with the windows install.

If the m.2 doesn't show (likely won't) then proceed with following the directions.

After loading the drivers during the install, the unallocated M.2 will show up after loading the drivers.

Also remember, do not install any other ssd or hdd that has a Windows installation on it. It'll mess up the boot files and it'll be a nightmare.

Guys... I have the 960 Pro and Evo... There are zero issues with them. Follow the directions to the T and it will work. I've done a million clean installs on Samsung drives....works Every time.

    Cheers

I have it on AHCI though not raid. It seems to be working fine though. Should I reinstall windows again and put it in raid configuration?

so let me see if i got right:

when ssd arrives, i disconnect my HDD, plug my SSD and it will auto detect it right? Then i set is as primary boot in bios, restart, and flash windows (usb) clean install, and be happy right :D ?

I too used AHCI instead of Raid when I installed Windows. I'm pretty sure you can change the mode without reinstalling the OS, also I'm curious as to any performance benefits of either.

It kinda is jus tplug and play. But you if you have secure boot enabled and you just cloned all contents from one drive to the other you have turn secure boot off first, and also in the Bios boot section remove the UEFI boot list which still points to your old drive. After removing and rebooting it will search for the UEFI boot list on your new drive.

That's because if your BIOS is in RAID mode, then you probably can't install the Samsung NVMe Driver or even use the native windows built in Microsoft NVMe Driver which in turn gives you horrible performance. You need to figure a way out to switch to AHCI then reinstall Windows in AHCI mode
